FOTD -- September 23, 2005 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Due to an unexpected small but rushed job, which needs to be delivered by this afternoon, today's discussion will be brief. Starting with today's image we will begin a series of FOTD's that explore scenes in the fractals created by the formula Z^(sqrt(2))+C. These fractals are infinite in number, and all are broken by discontinuities, but the midgets in them are relatively easy to find, and though not as varied as those in the classic Mandelbrot set, the midgets still have much variety. The names will merely indicate the number of each image in the series. The name of today's image is "Square Root of 2-1", which indicates it is the first in the series of images based on the square root of 2. Today's parent fractal is the one at ground level of the MandelbrotBC2 formula. In future FOTD's we will investigate other levels reached by this formula. The rating of a 7 is the seventh consecutive such rating. The render time of 1-1/2 minutes is blessedly brief. With only a moderately heavy load of work to finish, my day was not quite perfect, but it came close. Today is starting with some clouds and quite warm. Possible showers are forecast for later. Lazy XP or what?

When rendering big images in my brand new 3.2 Intel, 1 Gb ram etc, (finally I bought something new), in video=SF9, the first lines come at once. Suddenly the image began to be plot pixel-by-pixel, as if the machine is dozing. You must "wake" it. Click "enter". The machine startle and it becomes alive. The next 50 lines come at once, then comes the dozing phase... and I have to do the mechanical "enter" some 5-10 times for each image. Is that normal under Windows XP? Is there another automatic command I do not know? Thanks Marcus

FOTD -- February 22, 2005 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: In the northern hemisphere today is the first day of autumn. In the southern hemisphere it is the first day of spring. At 2223 GMT the sun stands directly over the equator somewhere not too far south of Hawaii. For a brief moment, everything is in balance, the great world fractal is motionless, and it is said an egg will balance on its end. This might be true in some parts of the world, but not here at Fractal Central. The only way I can make an egg stand upright is to place it on a flat surface and prop it up with a few grains of salt. The big question would seem to be how the story got started. It is also said that the entire universe might be a fractal, which would mean that eggs are fractals also. But there is nothing egg-like in today's striking image. Today's fractal is part of the larger fractal that results when the formula Z^(1.1892)+C is iterated at ground zero level of the logarithmic spiral. Actually, I should say 3.14159 levels down the complex logarithmic hyperspiral spiral, for the number pi is actually best considered ground level of the spiral. (I might write another formula, one that correctly sets ground level.) The exponent of Z in today's image is 1.1892, and it is no acci- dent that this number is the fourth root of 2. I chose this value because the midgets are easier to find in fractals whose Z exponents are roots of 2. I really did not need to choose a root of 2 however, for I have discovered a simple method of finding those elusive hidden midgets in fractals with exponents of Z between 1 and 2. After giving today's image full consideration, I rated it at a 7. This is about the 6th consecutive rating of a 7, which is a sign that, at least in my opinion, I am on a fractal roll. The name "The Fourth Root" is a simple description of the exponent of Z. The render time of 2 minutes is thankfully brief. FOTD -- September 21, 2005 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Toward the center of today's image, I see a feature that reminds me of a nautilus. And nautili always remind me of school. In Saint Martin's Catholic elementary school we studied the poem "The Chambered Nautilus", a poem that is obviously about reincar- nation. But reincarnation conflicts with the doctrine of the Catholic Church, which teaches that we are given only one life on earth, so the class somehow finished studying the poem without hearing of the possibility that individuals might have more than one life on earth in which to get it right. Actually, there is no nautilus in today's image. There is nothing in it but paths taken by iterated points, which have been colored according to the whims of one human being -- myself. The image is a scene in the fractal that results when the formula Z^(1.75)+C is iterated at a point 8 levels down the logarithmic hyperspiral. This parent fractal is a rather unimpressive thing, kind of a half-there main bay of a lost Mandelbrot set. But it does have the remnants of an East Valley, and the northern shore of this valley is filled with debris containing midgets such as the one which appears at the center of today's image. I named the image "Chambered Nautili". Actually, I see only one nautilus in the image, but in the world of fractals, things often come in infinities, so I made the assumption that more nautili are hiding in the scene. I rendered the image with the passes set to 'b'. I chose this method because it is always the most fun to watch in action, and with this particular image it works correctly and is actually faster than passes=g. The rating of a 7 might be based on the fact that the color theme of the image is blue and orange, my high-school colors. The render time of 9-1/2 minutes is not too bad. But it could be better. FOTD 20-09-05 (A Pleasant Diversion [7])

FOTD -- September 20, 2005 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: For today's image we return to the parent fractal of yesterday's image. But instead of investigating the Seahorse Valley area, we check the area near what passes for an East Valley. We travel a short distance inland to find today's scene. It is a typical scene in a Mandeloid in the exponent range between 1 and 2. The very tiny central midget lies at the point where the discontinuities converge. There is no perfectly arranged and unbroken pattern surrounding the midget, but we are given a hint of what the pattern would look like if it were not so broken up. The mathtolerance entry in the parameter file assures that the image will be rendered at the correct magnitude. The magnitude of 2.6*(10^12) is very near the limit of resolution. I put enough effort into the coloring to raise the image to a rating of a 7. I chose the name "A Pleasant Diversion" when the image reminded me of nothing at all. The render time of 6-3/4 minutes is about average for a quality FOTD fractal. There are always the machines that don't like Fractint however, and for the convenience of those with such units, as well as for those who prefer their fractals pre-cooked, the finished image is available for download on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Except for a few clouds, Monday turned out absolutely perfect here at Fractal Central. FOTD -- September 19, 2005 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a scene in the Z^(1.75)+C Mandeloid as it appears 3 levels down the logarithmic spiral. The parent Mandeloid resembles a Mandelbrot set rotated so that its east end is on the northwest and its main bud is on the southwest side of the main bay. All the parts are there, but they have been eroded by the deficient exponent of 1.75. Today's scene is located in an area of chaos radiating from the south branch of what passes for Seahorse Valley. I named the image "Discombobulation", which might or might not be a real word. If it is a real word, it means 'the state of having one's composure upset.' I rated the image at an above- average 7, most likely in recognition of the extra effort I put into coloring it. The render time of 3-1/5 minutes should try no one's patience, but there are those new-fangled machines out there, with those new-fangled operating systems and new-fangled video cards that don't get along with Fractint. For the convenience of those with such Fractint-challenged units, the finished GIF image has been posted to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> from where it may conveniently be downloaded. ;-) And speaking of new-fangled stuff, I think this Fractint incompatibility is part of a plot by a race of evil space aliens from the Draconian Empire, who are turning us into helpless technology-dependent wards, ready for easy enslavement. They say they only want to make our lives easier, but their real goal is to make us totally dependent on the technology they are giving us, which they will then unexpectedly withdraw, leaving us helpless to resist their attack. Watch carefully. In a few years they will start taking away our technological toys. Keep your eyes on the inexpensive old-style TV sets and the still-affordable vehicles powered by internal-combustion engines, which are some of the few things still around that were created by earth beings. The Draconians are already plotting to change the TV broadcast standards and make fuel for old-style vehicles prohibitively expensive, so that these devices will become useless. When the man at the Super-Everything-Mart tells us we'll need to buy super-expensive new-fangled TV's or hybrid vehicles that no human being can understand, you will know that we have reached the state of total dependency on Draconian technology, and the big takeover is near. Soon thereafter, the mobile phone networks and internet will be shut down, leaving us absolutely helpless, in a technological vacuum. Hopefully, the Draconians, who will rush in to save and enslave us, will give us at least some choice as to what kind of slave labor we will be forced to perform for them. ;-) The preceeding three paragraphs are not serious, or . . . no, it couldn't be. FOTD -- September 18, 2005 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Something is wrong with today's image. It is actually part of the Mandelbrot set, but nothing in the M-set looks quite like this. The image looks as though it might be part of a fractal created by some exotic formula. The problem lies in the bailout radius, which in today's image has been reduced to 1. When the bailout radius is reduced to less than 4, the M-set is simply not all there. Some points of the M-set that are normally trapped do wander beyond a radius of 1, and when the bailout radius is set to 1, these points are mistakenly plotted as escaping points. Other points are plotted as escaping after too few iterations. A bailout of 1 removes the entire negative stem of the M-set and a good part of the large period-2 bud, while the part of the set that remains is strangely changed. The points that are plotted as escaping after too few iterations form bulging rounded patches. In today's image, these patches plump up the normally zig-zag filaments in the Siegel-disk area of the M-set, rounding them into the sinuous, strongly colored, curving lanes we see in the image. Today's image is hyper-something, but I can't decide what. I let the name go as "Hyper-Something". The rating of a 7 might be a bit inflated. The coloring isn't really that great. But there is no doubt of the render time, which is a speedy 3-3/4 minutes. The best part of all is that even the minor task of rendering may be avoided by visiting the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and downloading the finished GIF image from there. As I suspected might happen, no rain fell here at Fractal Central on Saturday, but the temperature reached 90F 32C, and this was too warm for the duo of fractal cats, who spent most of the day indoors on their air-cooled shelf by the window, watch- ing the birds. Today is starting clear and somewhat cooler. Things are looking better for the duo. For me, it looks like I might have to go along on one of those antiquing expeditions. But regardless of what else happens, the next FOTD will appear in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and don't get hyper.
