The executable file for Fractint version 20.04 patch 2 is now available on the developer's web site www.fractint.org. The Xfractint source is also available. What's new: Fixed the display coordinates so they won't change, after an image had been zoomed, when the maintain screen coordinates parameter is set to yes. Fixed the corner parameter screen and image parameter screen so that rotating and/or skewing now doesn't get reset when changes are made. There are no diff's available yet. I'm working on it. The just around the corner version 20.5 is intended to be an official release. If you see problems with the current zip/tar files, please let me know so that I can fix them. Jonathan

FOTD -- September 30, 2005 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's lightning-fast FOTD continues the theme of the square root of 2, but it does so in the Julia orientation. There are no midgets in Julia sets, so I have wasted no effort searching for them in today's FOTD. I have instead taken an entire Julia set. There is also no outside-inside image in today's FOTD. I have rendered the outside parts totally black and rendered the inside parts with the inside set to 'fmod' with a proximity value of 0.02. What we have on the screen is actually the inside of the entire ground-level Z^(sqrt(2))+C Julia set. Its C-value is 0.115. The set has been rotated -90 degrees to give it a Y-axis symmetry. The resulting inside-only image reminds me for some reason of an avacado, though I have given it only a catalog-listing name. The rating of a 6 is some improvement, but not what I was hoping for. The image, which was calculated by the julzpower formula, is extremely fast. On my tired old machine it renders in 1/2 minute. On the speediest units, if it runs at all, it will finish in a few seconds. The cats approved. I did not approve of the heavy work, but work is work, so I did what needed to be done. Today is starting sunny but chilly. The cats should find it acceptable. FOTD -- September 29, 2005 (Rating 4) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Things are still a bit too busy here at Fractal Central for maximum FOTD efficiency, but I did manage to scrounge up an image worth being christened FOTD for September 29. To find today's image, I searched the chaos on the northern shoreline of the +36 version of the square-root-of-two Mandeloid, a parent fractal that rather reminds me of an old- fashioned string of sausages. The image features a midget at the center. Well, it could more accurately be described as a hole surrounded by the fractal soil that was dug away to create it. There appears to be no organized pattern at all surrounding the midget, only bits and pieces of rather nasty-looking debris left over from its creation. But all fractals, like all stories, should have a theme. And without a theme, today's image must be rated under average. I gave it a rating of 4, the highest under-average rating I could. Luckily, the image is a fast one, rendering in 2 minutes on my old machine, and in under 1 minute on the newest units. FOTD -- September 27, 2005 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's discussion is terse, not because I was busy, but because I spent several hours writing a rather lengthy reply to a letter about dreams that was posted recently to the philofractal list. The reply will appear later today on that list. Well, I finally found a midget worth a rating of 7 in the +4321 version of the Z^(sqrt(2))+C fractal. I found it on the long, meandering filament that extends south and east from what passes for a large south bud. It lies in the East Valley of a much larger midget on the filament. True, much of the worth of today's image is due to my coloring effort, but what's wrong with the human element in the world of fractals? Tomorrow, we'll move on to another interesting version of the Z^(sqrt(2))+C fractal to see what goodies we can find there. BTW, it's too bad that the classic Mandelbrot set comes in only one version. I guess this makes it kind of the god of fractals. I gave today's image only a catalog listing. Maybe I'm starting to run out of names. But a worthwhile visual artist really should not need to give names to his works. The works should speak for themselves. (Not in words of course.) In my opinion, the 8-minute render time of today's image is worth the effort. The evening tuna treat eased their troubles. Today is starting breezy, with sun and cooler temperatures. I expect a better day is coming. FOTD -- September 26, 2005 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's fourth venture into the world of the square root of 2 did not turn out as well as I had hoped. I could give the image a rating no higher than a 5. But a rating of a 5 is average, and an average fractal is always worth a look. I will search the +4321 parent fractal one more time before moving on to other levels. I am still confident that it holds some better scenes than the two I have found so far. Today's scene lies in a 5-pointed star near the tip of a filament extending from the third largest bud of the main bay of the parent, which is located on the eastern shoreline. The overly gaudy coloring makes the image look more like a wild carnival decoration than a dignified fractal, but the render time of 3 minutes is brief enough to keep computer time and inconvenience to a minimum. FOTD -- September 25, 2005 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a scene in the Z^(sqrt(2))+C fractal as it appears 4321 levels up the complex logarithmic hyper-spiral. The parent fractal resembles a Mandelbrot set sitting on its butt, or maybe Bozo the clown, waiting to be punched. A small cut-off area lies to the right of the main bud. Today's scene was found in this area. It's not that great an image, rating only a 5. In fact, the outside=iter version is so dull that I needed to add a bit of artificial interest by rendering the scene with the outside set to 'tdis'. But this particular parent fractal has far more impressive scenes in it -- of this I am certain. So be sure to see tomorrow's FOTD for something far better, which I have missed in today's FOTD. No merely average image should take longer than 3 minutes to render. With its render time of a brief 2-3/4 minutes, today's image meets that requirement handily. FOTD -- September 24, 2005 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Things are still a little busier than I would like here at Fractal Central today, so there will be no time for a long rambling discussion. The parent fractal of today's image, which is based on the square root of 2, is sliced 1234 levels down the complex log spiral. At this lowly level, the parent fractal is little more than a lopsided circle with hints of tiny buds, but as today's FOTD shows, it holds no shortage of midgets. The rather striking scene is located in some explosive chaos on the western shore of the main and only bay of its parent. I am losing track of the number of consecutive 7-rated images we have had. I think today's is number 8 in a row. The name "Square Root of 2-2" indicates that the image is the second in the series of images investigating fractals generated with the expression Z^(sqrt(2))+C. The series will continue until I grow bored. The render time of 4+ minutes is within reason, but those who are having an unreasonably impatient day may download the finished GIF image from the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> In a recent letter to the list, someone wondered where I get the color maps I use in the FOTD fractals. The answer is, anywhere I can find them. Sometimes the program produces a satisfactory color map with a strike of the 'enter' key, and all I need to do is tweak a few troublesome registers. At the other extreme, I occasionally create the entire map one register at a time, which is a slow process. Occasionally I run the FOTD images through an image-processing program such as Photoshop, though I never make changes that cannot be entered into a Fractint parameter file. And finally, though my humility prevents me from admit- ting it, my profession does require at least a bit of artistic sensitivity. Some of it unavoidably rubs off on the FOTD fractals. With a high temperature of 93F 34C and increased humidity here at Fractal Central on Friday, it was a bit too oppressive for cat comfort. But the showers never arrived, and the duo made the best of the marginal conditions, lurking for several hours in the holly thicket. To ease their displeasure, I gave them a bit of extra tuna in the evening. Today is starting with clouds and cooler temperatures. I see no reason why the duo should complain. The next FOTD will appear, as it almost always does, in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and be peaceful.
