It doesn't need to be a very big partition, and make it FAT16, not FAT32. DOS cannot read FAT32, but WXP can read FAT16 for accessing your fractal images when you're running WXP. It seemed to have no trouble finding the video cards VESA settings. Unfortunately, once I rebooted to Windows XP, it still won't run resolutions higher than 640 x 480. I think the only possibility left is to install something like Partition Magic and create a logical drive formatted in FAT16 or 32 and have Fractint reside there. That might work. Bill

FOTD -- October 18, 2002 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I enjoy surreal art, especially when it speaks of other realities. I also feel that surrealism is not total fantasy, for in all likelihood, other unseen realities surround and enclose our familiar reality much as the planet itself is surrounded and enclosed by space. This belief does not conflict with the critical thinking I mentioned in yesterday's FOTD. Critical thinking does not determine one's world view, rather one's world view determines whether critical thinking can show that person the way to the *entire* truth. Today's critically surreal FOTD image takes us to a totally alien world, where Mandelbrot buds line the ridge of a slight hill, and bits of fractal debris swirl about in the gentle breeze. The entire scene is illuminated by an unseen source of light beyond the left edge of the screen. All that is missing is a bug-eyed alien, and he might pop up over the ridge at any moment. The image has several unusual technical features. To start, other than the few darker green spots with curved edges, the entire scene consists of a blank inside left over from an 'evaporated' fractal. In this case however, the fractal was not evaporated by raising the bailout to a ridiculous level, it was evaporated by dropping the exponents of Z to 0.5 and -0.5, which equals the square root and reciprocal of the square root of Z. Then C was added to complete the iterated expression. I named the image "Periodicity Ten" because its appearance is determined by the setting of the periodicity. It is rare indeed to see an image so greatly controlled by its periodicity. To bring out the details in today's image, I set the inside to < atan >. The other inside fills also give interesting effects, and are well worth a look. The passes must be set to 1 when rendering the image. Otherwise many of the smaller fragments are missed. Unable to decide on the rating of an image so different from my usual fractal fare, I finally decided on an above-average 7. The relatively fast render time of 7-1/2 minutes probably helped in my decision. But even 7 minutes is a bit slow for someone with other more- pressing tasks waiting to be done. Bill: Sometimes XP comes installed with the defaul;t NTFS file system. Dos 7 can only read FAT or FAT32 file systems. If you have a lot of "legacy" software that might not be able to read or see the NTFS file system, then I suggest you re-install WinXP with FAT or FAT32 file system. My preference is FAT32. I think WinXp has some kind of partition utility (NOT FDD) that allows you to set up a second partition and drive in FAT or FAT32. I don't know whether or not you have to delete the first partition If you still have lots of free space on your HDD, you can use a a 3rd party partition utility like PartitionMagic to set up a second drive in FAT or FAT32. I think that even partition Magic allows you to somehow convert partition file systems back and forth. You can then load Fractint once you've created your FAT or FAT32 partition. Hans, You've had better luck than I have getting Fractint to run on XP. I have just learned that XP can be installed as either NTFS or FAT. My installation is NTFS, which is why I do not see the C: drive when I boot to DOS. Is your machine FAT? Also, do you know how running Virtual PC would affect this? Thanks. Unless you're talking about the DOS 7 that comes with Windows 98. Wouldn't it be possible to create Fractint GIF palettes with 8-bit values? I know it can be done because I use a paint program to tweak certain palette entries for hypertext background images. Your use of the word 'create' indicates that you see fractals as a means of artistic expression. UF, with its capability for multiple layers, and its transforms and gradients, etc., is the better program for doing 'artistic' things with the underlying fractals, and as such is the program of choice of those who see themselves as fractal artists. On the other hand, I consider myself a fractal explorer and a fractal purist. I do not 'create' fractals; I 'find' them. I try to show as clearly as possible the things that complex numbers do when iterated. I do not want to show how, for artistic purposes, I can distort what the numbers have done. As a DOS program, Fractint is fast, and once the key strokes become familiar, very simple to use. I use it because it best does what I want to do with fractals. Also, the upgrades are frequent and free. Finally, though I use Fractint, I have nothing against UF. Indeed, I sometimes use it to see what lies beyond the resolution limit of Fractint in some of my FOTD images. (Next FOTD in 13 hours!) Jim M.

Hi, Bill, I choose to install XP with the NTFS file system. Since DOS is using the FAT (= file allocation table) system, booting to DOS in fact is resulting in not acknowledging any NTFS drives or partitions. However, this is not affecting the use of Virtual PC! Far as I can see, within or under this virtual machine DOS is running as it always did. (I suppose it would not be different with a FAT-based XP.) Virtual PC is installed and started under and from Windows. As soon as you start it, you can either use your floppy or CD ROM drive (I also use ZIP drives, but did not manage to access them under Virtual PC) to install programs. Another and/or additional option is to configure a second virtual disk - which under Windows is nothing but a directory - to access and exchange files. This is rather convenient.
