FOTD -- October 27, 2002 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: In fantastic adventure games, where intrepid armchair explorers venture into computerized worlds of danger, lava pits are sometimes found. These pits of boiling, bubbling molten rock are just one of the many hazards that block the way to the ultimate goal. If stumbled into, these pits can be fatal to the adventurer . . . that is unless he has in his possession a magic charm of some sort that can enable him to survive things that would ordinarily mean instant death and a trip back to the beginning of the game or level. I mention computer adventure games because today's image reminds me of a lava pit, with bridges of fractal debris spanning the chasm beneath. I promptly named it "Bubbling Lava Pit". No one has yet fallen into the pit, though many have come close. Hopefully, this pit will claim no victims in the future. The formula behind the image is based on the golden ratio, where <a> is to <b> as <a+b> is to <c>. In today's case, I took the negative value and subtracted from it half as much of the negative of its squared value, which simply adds the number one to the original value. The result of this trick is a Mandeloid that resembles two partially coalesced Mandelbrot sets. The East Valley area of this figure is relatively undistorted, and that is where I found today's scene. When searching for a rating, I looked at yesterday's image and compared it with today's. An honest comparison led me to a rating of 6, which is still above average but only slightly. The render time of around 4 minutes is in line with the worth of the finished result. By afternoon, the grass was dry, which gave the dynamic duo the chance they needed to catch up on lost outdoor time. The extra time outdoors made them so happy that they almost forgot to ask for food when they returned inside. It's now Sunday morning. Re: Fractint "deadware"? NO! I have purchased and registered several of those "other" new windoze-based fractal programs. They are good; a couple of them are really good. But (unless I have missed something) none of them can zoom AS DEEP as Fractint, nor with anywhere close the max number of iterations. And Fractint still has the most options and fractal types. The other programs seem pointed towards those who just want to make pretty pictures. Fractint is (and always has been) for the serious fractal explorer. You can even write your own formulas and experiment! And it is good enuf just as it is. (I use the developers version 20+). As for DOS obsolete, I feel that anyone sophisticated enuf to use Fractint to it's max capabilities should be able to buy or obtain a cheap/second-hand pentium-2 or 3 system and install DOS on it - this will be possible for many years yet. Deadware? Not in this lifetime ... ... ...

FOTD -- October 26, 2002 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The theory of supersymmetry is the latest fad in physics. It is supposed to show the way to the ultimate theory of (almost) everything (TOE). Included in the theory are a multitude of new 'sparticles', and mathematical abstractions known as super- strings, with perhaps 7 or more extra dimensions for the super- strings to twist, turn and vibrate in. The intersection of vibrating, multi-dimensional superstrings with our three-dimen- sional space is supposed to appear as the familiar 'particles' of traditional physics. None of this string-business has been directly observed, nor is it ever likely to be. The theory is so popular because the numbers can be made to add up. When I see stuff like this happening, I wonder whether we have really discovered a new part of outer reality, or are merely playing games with numbers and devising clever experiments until, purely by chance, we finally find a test that appears to confirm our expectations. Then I sit back and wonder whether the whole vision of the atomic world is nothing but a model of our own creation, and finally I look metaphysically through the Fractal Central window, out at the universe, and wonder the same. Of course, the TOE is not truly a theory of absolutely every- thing. Unless I have missed it, the theory does not suppose to tell what the superstrings are made of, (If it is energy, what is energy made of?), or why the strings exist in the first place. The theory also ignores the subjective world of thought and awareness. I suppose these inner things are shuffled aside because they are supposed to arise at a level above the quantum world. (Give metaphysicians the problem, then ignore and mock them because there is no way to test their theories.) Yes, I realize that you have been waiting for the connection to fractals, and here it is: I named today's image "Super Symme- try" because the filaments swirling around the central midget match my vision of what a superstring might look like . . . if it had an actual appearance, that is. I rated the image at an 8, because, with its rings of golden filaments on a blue back- ground, it is rather striking, and also because blue and gold are my old high-school colors. The parent fractal has the same nature as the most recent parents, with a central Mandeloid surrounded by a vast, sprawling suburban region of filaments and rings. Today's image is located on a filament inside a ring near the tip of a filament extending from a crooked bud on the east shoreline of the northern bay of the Mandeloid. I rendered the image in the default outside=iter manner. I used the passes=b option because it is very fast and works perfectly with this image. With the images' render time of one minute, finding the fastest rendering method is not very significant, however. In my world, it's once again Saturday morning, and all is well here at the fractal depot. If I'm lucky, I'll get through the day without doing any significant work. It's not the default setting as per Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q286906 It can be manually set by digging into the Advanced settings and choosing from "all modes," but is not officially supported. He might have messed up video drivers, or old ones. Since they say not supported, this could be a clue. Maybe changing to a supported display resolution might help ... Corrupt display on exiting from Fractint

I am a newcomer here, though I have been using Fractint on and off for some time. I expect this has been answered lots of times before, but here goes. I run Windows 98 SE and after running Fractint, particularly in SF7 display mode, I find that the Windows video display is so corrupt as to be useless. Typically just black and white, no detail, no text, no cursor. The only cure is to re-boot. Grateful for any ideas! Jonathan Barber Birmingham England

First of all, I think it's more of a problem with time rather than money. Anybody with the skill to rewrite Fractint probably already has a full-time, well-paying programming job. I don't think the job of rewriting Fractint can be done in any reasonable length of time by somebody (or even more than one person) working part-time in the evening. And I don't think anybody is going to quit their full-time job to do it as it is doubtful they would make much money with shareware revenue. Secondly, and more important to me, is that Fractint is open source. I believe in the open source concept, *not* because it allows me to get free software, but because of all the other advantages it has. In fact, it would probably violate the copyright to turn Fractint into shareware. I doubt if Tim would allow it. Nick

FOTD -- October 25, 2002 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image continues the same theme as the most recent three images. One negative part of Z^(-14.14) was added to six negative parts of Z^(-1.414) before 1/C was added. The relation to the square root of 2 is intentional. The resulting parent fractal consists of the same large many-lobed Mandeloid as the past three FOTD's, but in this case, the enormous rings to the east are missing. The northern bay of the parent is partly obscured by two thick arms extending toward its mouth, which create the impression that the area is not critical and therefore no midgets will be found there. However, in the worlds created by the M-mix4 formula, things are not always as they first appear, and a closer examination of the eastern arm revealed suspiciously symmetrical areas. When I dove down into one of these areas, I did indeed find a perfect quadratic midget. The entire area is in a state that I call 'eroded', with the normally solid outside elements broken by numerous holes, which in many cases are larger than the midget itself. When the scene is calculated at the default bailout radius of 100, the holes are so numerous that they comprise the greater part of the scene. When this situation exists, the better fractals are often found when the remaining outside material is 'evaporated' by raising the bailout radius to one-googol, leaving only the ghost of the midget that was once there. It is this midget- ghost that is visible in today's image, which totally consists of trapped 'inside' points. The ghost is made manifest by the inside fill of bof61. With its 3-D effect, the ghost-midget rates a conservative 7, perhaps a liberal 8. I decided on the lesser rating; I could just as honestly have chosen the 8. (Is today's image really one whole rating beneath yesterday's?) I have no explanation for the name I gave the image -- "A Ringing Spectre", but the words have a poetic quality that rather matches the feeling of the blue and gold image. The 12-minute render time is somewhat slow, making the download the wiser but not quite as much fun choice. Today promises to be a gloomy repeat, so I guess it's a good chance to get ahead on some of the work I've been putting off. I can endure the limitations imposed by DOS, perhaps the greatest of which is the inability to apply arbitrary precision math to type=formula fractals. But if a native XP version of Fractint were released which bypassed this limitation, as well as the video-mode problems, I would likely switch to it. Does anyone volunteer to do the job? Jim M.
