Do you have any more info about this? I'd be glad to investigate this a bit further, but most roads/streets in Tokyo have no name, and when they have they are usually boring names like Yasukuni dori or Dogenzaka. I tried Google but beside references to the publisher or links to seedy Tokyo night spots I didn't find much of interest...

If memory serves, Hips Road was actually the name of a clothing boutique (maybe even a chain) associated with hideous mid-eighties Japanese all-girl teen-pop sensations Onyanko Club. Along the Menudo line, they had a constantly revolving membership. They would often appear on TV wearing clothing with the Hips Road logo prominently displayed. http://www.idollica.com/onyanko/OnyankoClub.html And here are a couple of shots of members wearing the offending garments: http://www2d.biglobe.ne.jp/‾tis/panic/data/13/index.html http://www.idollica.com/kudo/KudoShizuka.html Alan

If my memory serves it's nothing more than a hip name. it was born in the time when Zorn liked to put two words together to make a cool name, like Naked City. I think Hips Road was his record label before tzadik, or the name of him producing. I am sure i read someting about in one of the Filmworks booklet, probably the first one, or maybe the Spillane CD. arthur
From the Spillane liner notes: ON JAPAN At one point I wanted to call this record Hip's Road. It's in the Harajuku section of Tokyo, but it's not a road; it's actually a boutique that caters to young teenage girls, like the ones you see singing pop songs on Japanese TV. That's not why I wanted to call the record Hip's Road; I like the name. The Japanese have a really great way of using an mixing up the English language. So "Hip's Road" for me is like the sound of "Naked Lunch" or "Blade Runner," a combination of words that appeals to me. ...and of course all (?) Tzadik releases say "A Project of Hips Road" on the back, minus the apostrophe. I wonder if that's the name for an umbrella company Zorn has set up to administer Tzadik and any other biz he may be involved in. Wm. Crump On May 11, 2004, at 11:25 AM, Arthur Rother wrote:

Would it be tantamount to having Zorn, LLC; so if, god forbid, his various enterprises go bankrupt he isn't directly liable? That's what I always assumed was the purpose of Hips Road or I also speculated that it was some manner of funding agency for Tzadik. Are Avant releases similarly marked as a project of Hips Road? I don't have any of my Avant cases readily accessible; they are in another state currently. Zach -----Original Message----- ...and of course all (?) Nothing about Hips Road on DNA's "Last Live...", the only Avant release at hand. Wm.C On May 11, 2004, at 1:08 PM, Zachary Steiner wrote:

"Naked City" is the title of a book of photographs by Weegee (like the one on the cover.) Julien
