ON JAPAN
At one point I wanted to call this record Hip's Road. It's in the Harajuku section of Tokyo, but it's not a road; it's actually a boutique that caters to young teenage girls, like the ones you see singing pop songs on Japanese TV. That's not why I wanted to call the record Hip's Road; I like the name. The Japanese have a really great way of using an mixing up the English language. So "Hip's Road" for me is like the sound of "Naked Lunch" or "Blade Runner," a combination of words that appeals to me.

...and of course all (?) Tzadik releases say "A Project of Hips Road" on the back, minus the apostrophe. I wonder if that's the name for an umbrella company Zorn has set up to administer Tzadik and any other biz he may be involved in.

If my memory serves it's nothing more than a hip name.
it was born in the time when Zorn liked to put two words
together to make a cool name, like Naked City.

I think Hips Road was his record label before tzadik,
or the name of him producing.

I am sure i read someting about in one of the Filmworks
booklet, probably the first one, or maybe the Spillane CD.
