He was 61. According to close friend and guitar maker Rick Kelly, who discovered Quine's body, the musician died of a heroin overdose Memorial Day weekend. He had been despondent over the recent death of his wife. Born in Akron, Ohio, Quine was heavily influenced by the Velvet Underground, whose music he recorded obsessively while living in San Francisco. He moved to New York in 1971 and became the lead guitarist for bassist Richard Hell's important group the Voidoids, with whom he recorded two albums. His skittering, unpredictable work with Hell defined the possibilities of punk guitar. During the '80s, he recorded and toured frequently with Lou Reed and played on saxophonist/composer John Zorn's best-known albums. Quine made key guest appearances on Tom Waits' "Rain Dogs" (1985) and Marianne Faithfull's "Strange Weather" (1987). In 1989, he began a long association with Matthew Sweet; he also worked regularly with Lloyd Cole. In 2001, Universal released a three-CD box of Quine's live 1969 recordings of the Velvet Underground, "The Bootleg Series Volume 1: The Quine Tapes." "He was a marvelous guitarist, a soulful music lover with high standards and had an eviscerating wit," Patti Smith Band drummer Jay Dee Daugherty tells Billboard.com. Man, I'm terribly bummed. Robert Quine was my favorite guitarist. Consistently good and one of the greatest sidemen ever. "Blank Generation" and "the Blue Mask" are two of my favorite albums. Guess now I'll finally get around to picking up Painted Desert. Damn. A shock, for sure. I was hoping he'd be able to still work after his wife's death--- according to a couple people it was a suicide. We've lost a great musician. - Gene

The guitar solo on "Erotico" is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. I've been listening for a few months, and it has a some staying power. I keep coming back to it, after it got a chance to prove itself and grow on me. It's just a good solid album with a few so-so tracks. It's not as good as Murray Street, but that doesn't mean it is bad. It's amazing how clean it is at first (cleaner than MS), but the clarity reveals many layers of well arranged, intricate guitar work--in singable, rock songs no less. The songs are as catchy as anything SY has done, but they aren't annoying or lesser songs. They concentrated on melodies (in addition to the arrangements) on this one, and they are wonderful (particularly on Renaldo's songs). All in all, Sonic Nurse is enjoyable, if not mind blowing. If a band can put out albums that are intersting and enjoyable after 20+ years in existence, can you really ask too much more?
