I haven't been to Bangkok in a few years and to Phnom Penh for even longer, but I used to do a fair bit of CD shopping at the Tower Records in Siam Square, which, in the day, was pretty cheap and had a good selection of improvised music, including Zorn, Derek Bailey, Laswell, etc. If you are in Phnom Penh, you should ask the locals about good Khmer rock music and ask to get a hold of some tapes to try out. I've heard some really good Khmer rock, and some time ago, there was a reissue on CD of Cambodian rock music of the early 70s, which had a lot of rave reviews. You're not likely to find that particular CD there, but you might find music from a lot of the artists from it. If you're in Thailand, you most assuredly should check out the raucous rhythms of the music of Isaan and Southern Laos. For that, I'd suggest a trip up through Northeast Thailand--hit the big places like Surin, Nakhon Ratchathani, and Nong Khai and ask around. That's my favorite place in all of Thailand and it gets only 2% of the tourists. Don't miss it.

A wonderfully jarring 2 sets of live Arto Lindsay Trio material(over an hour and a half of music!) are currently available on the Dutch radio web site "Is Dit Nog Wel Jazz?" It's a HUGE trio with Melvin Gibbs and Micah Gaugh. I can't recommend it enough - Most of the material seems to be from the last two or three records. It was the last show of a world tour, apparently. Hana hou! (Encore!) Sated, Nad NP: Prince's "N.E.W.S." - yes!!! Every time I get weary of the little devil, he's throws something like this out, and I'm hooked again. As far as the first Feelies Record goes, I would second that recommendation wholeheartedly, worth picking up. Probably doesn't sound as out there today, but still a great listen. Anyone with Tokyo recommendations also have some recommendations for south east Asia by chance? I am currently spending ten weeks in Phnom Penh, and outside of the very interesting local buddhist music emanating from the temples at five in the morning, I've found nothing but pirated versions of top 40. don't forget the first Lounge Lizards LP. Lindsay is the perfect addition to the band and adds great texture to Lurie's suave sound. He knows when to listen and when to chime in with a good skronk. imho: the best Lounge Lizards lineup hands down (even though Ribot was great as well). I am anxiously anticipating my copy of the DNA discography from forced exposure as I type this. in unrelated but related inquiries, has anyone heard Anton Fier's first(?) band The Feelies? I agree. The rehearsal footage was fantastic. From the point of view of a music student, watching his "conduction" techniques was fascinating. If you want to read some very intersting stuff about Zorn and his background, I suggest William Duckworth's 'Talking Music'. Great read, especially when Zorn describes the rather alarming way he started his massive record collection. I distinctly remember him refusing to sell me a biography of Eric Dolphy book because he wanted to keep it for himself. Its pronounced "fear," like "beer." Dale.

Bookshelf on top of the sky

Finally got my copy of the Bookshelf on top of the sky DVD. I know this was discussed on the list before when the film did the rounds but for some of us this is our first opportunity to see it. As a fan I loved the great footage of rehearsals and performances from the last ten years and, when talking, Zorn is more open than I have ever read him in the press. For anybody still intrigued by Cobra there is no explanation of the piece but the rehearsal film is very enlightening. A couple of questions to those in the know. In the scenes where Zorn is talking about his life and work is he giving a talk or lecture? He seems to be looking around the room at a group. The whole structure behind the film (the film makers search for a way to film and ultimately interview John Zorn (which she never achieves) with Zorn teasing her with promises on her answerphone) seems a little mendacious when its Tzadik that have released the DVD.
