Drummers... (and a bit of Terry Bozzio)

Hi y'all... I've been a drummer for most of my life, and now my little brother is getting into it. He asked me which essential drummers he should check out. I think it's been discussed in the past, but I'm sure in the meantime some of you have got some new input/ ideas. Of course I recommended some of the guys I admire: Tony Williams, Joey Baron, Elvin Jones, Boris Williams (ex The Cure), Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), Terry Bozzio (btw: check out some of his mental solo videos here: http://www.vicfirth.com/artists/bozzio/mediaframe.html ); and some people I have heard you talk about like Hamid Drake and Susie Ibarra. Squidco received a parcel from Canada today, a reel-to-reel tape with a short note from our own Professor Brother Lucy. The note reads (in its entirety) as follows: Greetings: I've been spending some fascinating time at a Calvinist retreat up here in temperate Ontario doing some important research about which I'm very excited. I can't go into too much detail here, but it has to do with the genetic superiority of the gastro-intestinal system possessed by humans with the YY chromosome, a sort of positive interrelationship between the digestive and reproductive systems. The enclosed recording will clarify, but I beseech thee, do not play this until the appointed broadcast hour. I will be in touch soon, with further details of this exciting project. The reason I say so is that awhile back, I was listening to a Robert Palmer tune ("Aeroplane") at a friend's house and not only did I fall in love with the tune, but I immediately thought of Cyro Baptista. When I looked at the CD, sure enough, there was Cyro Baptista's name (spelled differently on the CD, oddly enough, as "Battista"). If I'm not mistaken, that was the only song on the album on which Cyro played, and I somehow recognized his style. Normally, I'm not particularly interested in percussion, but Cyro's talent somehow stands apart from the rest for me. The best music ever recorded?

Hello again... Some of my friends used to wind me up a lot because very often I would play some music and say "This is one of my fave tracks of all times!"... (But there really are that many that I simply adore... ;-)) Since my record/cd collection is in storage back in Europe, I sometimes ask friends to email me MP3s. Yesterday I received Coltrane's Transitions (the first track), a tune I had been longing to hear again. And (don't laugh!): to me personally, it is one of the best recorded pieces I have ever heard in my life... Every time I hear it I am simply overwhelmed by its power... kaoru abe questions

1. Some time ago, it seems that someone on the list posted a link to a website selling a box set of Kaoru Abe material, possibly on cdr, and almost certainly _not_ the LIVE AT GAYA series released by DIW, so possibly bootleg material. Does anyone know about this? I'd appreciate comments on these recordings, or at least a link to the distributor. 2. Is there a North American dsitributor for DIW that still might have their Abe series? Those individual cds were in print, or at least available, only a year ago, now most of them have evaporated, and it seems DIW might not be selling their cds in America anymore.
