Like Afghanistan, which everybody quickly forgot and which is now actually in a worse state than it was under the Taliban. Sad but true. No Politics

Seriously, the reason, I opted to join the Zorn mailing list was to gather information about John Zorn and his music. It's been great getting everyone's input about Zorn stuff and Zorn related artists/material/shows, etc., etc. However, I didn't sign up to read other people's opinions about the current situation with Iraq, and other world issues which currently face our Nation and the World Community. Obviously, with a list so big, everyone is going to have a different opinion about this or that. Personally, I don't have a problem with another man's opinion, it's his/her right as a person to think and decide however s/he wants to feel or act. If I wanted to read people's take on the issues at hand the world faces, I would of signed up for a list which caters to those interests. So, please, let's keep this list about music, info and items which pertain to Johnny Z and those sounds we all crave. I appreciate your cooperation and understanding with my request. A few short words about the war, I am admiring any musician who is not afraid to oppose the stupid war against Iraq- Dave Douglas, William Parker or Ani Difranco, as i am admiring any musician/artist- elliot Sharp, Marc Ribot, Marty Ehrlich or Anthony Coleman (all Jews), who is not afraid to oppose the brutal Israeli occupation in the Palestinian territories. Music does not exist outside the real 'messy' and 'political' world, and musicians/artists, who have some influence, can voice their opinions against the futile violence that the coming war of Iraq will bring on us all. If any is looking for a further reading i would suggest the book of the Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Zizek, "Welcome to the Desert of the Real- Five Essays on September 11 and related Dates". I read it in Hebrew so i don't know which publishing house published it English. ROVA w. Frith, Otomo and others...?

I went to the 1st night and my impressions were similar to Graham's. The 1st 2 pieces Rova did that dated back to the 70's were both very rhythmic and powerful with very strong playing. When the larger ensemble came on for Lacy's "Saxophone Special" , a lot more was open to the musician's interpretation as not a whole lot of it was composed. Nels was very strong and inventive (a little too loud in the mix at the beginning), using his pedals, boxes, and egg beater to maximum effect. I was less impressed with Ikue Mori, who seemed to play the same splashes of sound over and over, regardless of what everyone else was playing. Very similar to the splashes of sound she played over and over when I saw her perform with Dave Douglas a few years ago. Otomo was interesting. I never saw anyone bow turntables before. I couldn't see a lot of what he was doing because a music stand was in the way. Rova was amazing themselves, not only with their solos, but also in their direction of all the players, to keep things moving, varied and focused. I picked up Otomo's New Jazz Quintet cd "Live"on DIW where he plays guitar. Exceptionally well I might add. Does he have any other jazz cds out there that are similar to this? Speaking of books about war and terrorism . . . . I highly recommend Jean Baudrillard's the "Spirit of Terrorism." Bruno: I won't come down on you the way our friend Patrice did. I'll simply suggest that you skip over subjects that are not of interest to you. For some of the rest of us, art doesn't -- and can't -- exist in a vacuum, and politics may even become more important for some folks to vent about, for a minute or two, anyway. Since this is effectively an unmoderated list, anything can and usually will come up sooner or later. Political topics generally fire up on the Zornlist only once or twice a year, and usually last less than a week. Just keep hitting that "delete" button and you won't be bothered at all.
