Was this not previously translated as "Froth on the Daydream"? A fine novel novel, as is Heartsnatcher. Zornlist: Here's a question you all might be able to help me with. I'm toying with the idea of 'music in literature' as a topic for a class, and I'm trying to think of substantial fiction that is either about a musician, or about a musical milieu, or a type of music. Some examples of what I mean: Toni Morrison, 'Jazz' Michael Ondaatje, 'Coming Through Slaughter' Oscar Hijuelos, 'The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love' James Baldwin, 'Another Country' (at least the first section) Michael Thelwell, "The Harder They Come" I think Rushdies "Ground Beneath Her Feet" deals with rock music? what about MacInnes, "Absolute Beginners"? The book doesn't have to focus exclusively on music, but it ought to use it in some important way-- for example, Hanif Kureishi's "Buddha of Suburbia" deals with punk/glam at times. Or Langston Hughes' "Not Without Laughter" has some discussion of jazz/blues. Musics and/or literatures other than the US would be a great help. Thanks! Andy Miller

Oops. Like I said: I missed the original post. Martin commented on how good Sex Mob's new Dime Grind Palace is. I would agree. I know they have their detractors but I like 'em and this is their best to date. Should make a great live show. Complete Jack Johnson was moved back to October 13 in UK. No idea why, its been reviewed everywhere here. Richard Gardner

I don't think anyone has mentioned Geoff Dyers wonderful book But Beautiful. Its really a series of impressionistic fictions woven around the real lives of jazz heroes. Thelonius Monk has good story and Chet Baker but I really loved the part about Lester Young in the army. Its all held together by a narrative of Duke Ellington being driven across country from Kenosha to Kansas City by Harry Carney. This is Chet Baker : Onstage at Birdland, eyes shut, one arm hanging at his side....trumpet raised to his lips like a brandy bottle--not playing the horn but swigging from it, sipping it. If you love the music you simply have to read this. Richard Gardner

By the end of this month TamTam Books (yours truly) will be putting out the ultimate novel (in general) by Boris Vian that is jazz influenced. It's called 'L'Ecume des jours (Foam of the Daze). There are many jazz references in the material which is commented by the endnotes in the end of the novel. This I promise, it's great! A new translation by Brian Harper.
