Hello, ....a few that haven't been mentioned. Samuel R. Delaney's "Heavenly Breakfast"- about a late '60s hippie commune band. Christopher Sorrentino's "Sound on Sound"- a postmodern novel about a hacky rock band called Hi-Fi playing a night club gig. Significant because the details are so spot on. I remain.... Julio Cortazar "El perseguidor" a story about Charlie Parker. He also mentions jazz in his novels. Also Boris Vian metions jazz and jazz musicians in some of his novels.

I'd say that a number of Jack Kerouac's works would fit the bill here. Some other favorites: - Geoff Nicholson "Flesh Guitar" (a personal favorite) - James S. Rich "Cut My Hair" - Bill Flanagan "A&R" (savagely funny) - Tom Perrotta "The Wishbones" - Jack Fuller "The Best of Jackson Payne" (good mystery book) - Mark Shipper "Paperback Writer" (hilarious and sadly out of print, I think) Some would say that Albert Goldman was a fiction writer too (and not a good one either). There's a substantial musical influence on his short story, "Entropy," and there's TONS of musical happening in the brilliant "Gravity's Rainbow" (a long passage regarding a church choir, two characters discussion of Rossini vs Beethoven, and a freewheeling scene in a jazz club bathroom are just some that spring to mind, not to mention the constant bursting into song his narrative style does). I think people on this list should read Pynchon simply for his reliance on structure, with his playful use of language. andy: a few that leap to mind: ellison 'invisible man' (which has some explicit references to music & jazz; but also affords the wonderful opportunity to have any students read this book!) anything by milan kundera, especially 'immortality' and 'the book of laughter and forgetting' (he knows music and has some thoughtful observations about music/musicians) albert murray's 'the seven league boots' got props in the late 90's but i have to confess that it did less than a little for me. music (blues & jazz especially) permeate the mostly awesome work of amiri baraka (aka leroi jones). i'm sure there are some other great examples, but there's a start. peace. sean -----Original Message----- From: Miller, James Andrew (UMC-Student) [mailto:jam189@mizzou.edu] Sent: Tuesday, October 07, 2003 1:02 PM To: zorn-list(a)mailman.xmission.com Subject: fiction about music or musicians? I enjoyed Jubilee but didn't really know what to make of it. For some reason I got a similar vibe as from some of the classic 80s Troma movies... Now if only they'd release Caravaggio...
