The UBS sponsorship has two sides (as always). There are a lot of swiss musicians who wouldnÂ´t record for Hat because of the deep involvement of UBS during fascism. Can money smell bad? "I hope you are kidding. If you know they are Nazis then they have already made their politics known. Duh. Hey, if Osama puts out a really cool CD maybe you ought to buy that one, too." Okay, few more examples. I would never guess that Bruce Willis is a Republican from the movies he makes. I think he makes strong choices and performs well, and I still think so, even though I know he's a Republican. I'm not going to stop watching his movies, and I'm not going to boycott future releases. However, if he decided to star in a drama whose moral was poor people are lazy and need more welfare reform, or that gay people are destroying society, or an action flick whose point was the need for Star Wars, I wouldn't go see it. Feel free to replace any of the above plots with one's that you may know actually reflect Willis' Republican beliefs. If you start to limit your intake to only artists who are not racist/sexist/anti-gay/fascist/ableist, you are left with pretty slim pickings (but you can still listen to MY favorite band, Rage Against The Machine! Unless of course, your a Democrat). There's a anecdote from Hitler tells in Mein Kampf about going around the city, peering into the eyes of a German shopkeeper, and seeing a Jew. In fact, he says, the whole country was degenerating by turning into Jews. This is an interesting spin on the melting pot theory, decidedly more pernicious than the assimilationist American version, in which the Jews, or the Japanese, turn. So, if a Jewish or a Japanese person, where to say they went around their neighborhood or country, and everyone looked white, it's a different thing altogether from Hitler's paranoid obsessive delusions. "I feel ashamed that I have even taken my time, and the list, to reply to your statements." I doubt that Osama would put out a, "really cool CD." First, music had been banned in his country, second, there is a high probability it WOULD be political, and third, he would then be left with less subject matter than Christian pop groups. However, he's no neo-Nazi. For one thing, he organized the death of far more people, to my knowledge, than a single neo-Nazi ever did. Which points out that being a huge racist, and killing people, are two TOTALLY DIFFERENT things. Hi, DAvid, I've been told by both Helma at FMP and Rudiger CArl, that FMP will be releasing a Manuela CD at some point in the future. I'm still waiting for my copy of Reichel's new one and the Total Music Meeting CD to come from Cadence (they carry both of them) and I must say I'm looking forward to hearing both. Fellow music aficionados, While at Tonic last week for the Billy Martin solo & trio sets* I noticed the posting of: Electric Masada: August 3rd (Sat) 8pm & 10pm with Cyro Baptista (percussion), Trevor Dunn (bass), John Medeski (organ), Marc Ribot (guitar), Jamie Saft (keyboard / synthesizer / lap-steel guitar), Kenny Wollesen (drums) & John Zorn (alto sax) Of course, more info at the Tonic website: http://www.tonicnyc.com Although it would be ideal to hear the Masada Quartet (Baron, Cohen, Douglas & Zorn), who were amazing at Chicago's Symphony Center back in April, it would seem that those particular players are hard to get a hold of these days to rendezvous in NYC for such an occasion. And I'm not even selling any CDs; Pei-Yi * great music by Billy Martin, both solo and with Daniel Carter and Reuben Radding: the rhythm section would lay down some deep, soulful grooves while Daniel Carter slowly but solidly wails out bluesy, almost sad notes. Very intriguing juxtaposition of the upbeat energy along with (and also against) the focused soulful sounds of the reeds .... sometimes it felt that the communication between the two voices were lacking, but other times the irony of the two attitudes were coming together quite nicely. Artist: Phill Niblock Title: G2,44+/x2 Label: Moikai There's one more record that I thought I would put in a good word for. Phill Niblock's recent release on the Drag City imprint, Moikai, (curated by Jim O'Rourke) was originally titled "Guitar Too, For Four" but has been released as "G2,44+/x2". I assume that this title means that the original composition "Guitar Too, For Four" G2,44 is joined by live guest guitarists (Rafael Toral on the first track, various others including Thurston Moore on the second track) and there are two versions of it. Cryptography aside, what you have really got is two half-hour long drones composed of 24 tracks of manipulated guitar. The nature of the drone is very interesting. It has both acoustic and electronic characteristics. It has the unpredictably of a human component (a la Tony Conrad's violin drones or the hurdy gurdy drones of Keiji Haino) but it seems a little bit too clean to be purely generated by mechanical means. There is a hint of modulated sine-wave-style drone to the piece. This is the first time I have heard the two disparate styles overlap. If you compare it to Niblock's earlier drones like, for example, "The Unmentionable Piece for Trombone" starring the playing of George Lewis (Blast First Records), then this new piece is more minimalistic. There is less variation to the drone. However, the drone is rich (24 tracks + live musicians!) and textured and strangely soothing. There are no high frequencies and no erratic pops and scratches or other electroacoustic garnishes to distract the ears from the drone. A drone has really got to have something special to demand multiple listens. The two drones on G2,44+/x2 are compelling and I have been drawn back over the past couple weeks several times to listen to it again. David K.

Hans Reichel: Yuxo

Artist: Hans Reichel Album: Yuxo Label: a|l|l (an imprint of FMP) A month or more back I asked if anyone had any info regarding the new release by Hans Reichel, his second daxophone operetta entitled "Yuxo". While it does not appear listed on the FMP site, http://www.free-music-production.de/ , you can order it from that site. I did and my copy has already arrived from overseas in my mailbox. The catalog number is a|l|l 003 and the cost is the same as that posted for the other two releases on a|l|l. (I forget the exact amount of euros.) It's been 10 years since the first daxophone operetta on FMP, "Shanghaied on Tor Road", came out but this second release is well worth the wait. It was one of those things I had been waiting so long to hear that, once I had the cd in my hands, it took no effort to wait another few hours until all the business of the day was done and it was time to go to bed and I had turned out all the lights and turned the stereo up loud and played tracks 1 & 2 in the dark. I stopped there because the first two tracks were so good, there wasn't any need to hear any more right away. Tonight, I think I will get to track 3. Anyway, the point is that this cd is the natural extension of where "Shanghaied..." was headed. The music on the cd is beautiful and, despite lack of fanfare, available now. If you consider yourself a fan of FMP and you haven't heard one of these daxophone releases, shame on you. If you liked "Shanghaied...", you will like this one more. If you don't know what the daxophone is, then...The daxophone, a wooden instrument of Reichel's creation, can span the gamut of conventional instruments sounds (ranging from tuba to clarinet to percussion to violin--you have to hear it to believe it) but it also has a unique voice of its own. As Reichel says in the liner notes that accompany Yuxo, the first daxophone cd demonstrated the capabilities of the instrument, but this new one is really nothing less than a piece of beautiful music that could have been played on nothing but the daxophone. HI, If I'm not wrong, Hathut has sponsorship again. At least I remember seeing a logo in some of the latest releases of the label. The sponsorship thing is really laudable on the Swiss governement end and the UBS as well. However, when I saw that "pleading-for-sponsors" notice on the hathut website I couldn't help feeling a bit angry. If Leo, Victo, RecRec, etc can survive without external financial backup, I'm pretty sure that hat can do it too. I found it somehow ridiculous.
