Townsend

'Boris the Spider' is my all-time favorite Who song! Also John's 'Heaven and Hell' is great too. A lot of Townsend's songs (for me) are not that interesting - and too grand for nothing. In that context, John's contributions are like a breath of fresh air among the stale odor of making too large of a statement. But then again, the early Who singles are good work. But in that context, 'Boris' sounds ...fantastic. Also the bass solo on 'My Generation,'...fantastic! I have read that The Who will continue on their tour this summer - that must be weird. It's probably sacrilege to dis the Who so soon after the great John Entwistle's death but I have always been baffled by "Tommy"'s popularity. There are some wonderful songs but it doesn't hang together as a whole, for me. I have The Who's "BBC Sessions" in work today. Can't wait for "Boris The Spider." I actually liked the standards album better than the new one -- which I like fine, but it was amazing how fresh and yet lived-in the songs sounded on the covers album. I thought it was cool he didn't Roxify them. I didn't think of his approach as so much conservative as revealing that he's a great interpreter quite independent of that signature sound. Speaking of great interpreters, what a shame Rosemary Clooney has passed on. I've never gotten into Sonic Youth, but I can still give them a lot more credit than that. And Mule Variations is getting way too much flack- it's a good album.
