I've been on a Hawking's vibe: "Universe in a Nutshell" -- just finished "A Brief History of Time" -- just started "Bruce Lee: Fighting Spirit" by Bruce Thomas -- just purchased Additionally I bought a bunch of cookbooks by Fu Pei Mei so I can begin experimenting with traditional Chinese cooking. I believe Zorn is still quite excited over some nice hardbound editions of "The Equinox" by Crowley which is by his bedside. i highly recommend all of the herzog dvd's. (yes, they are all up to the standard of "fitzcarraldo"!) all of the fictional films have insightful and endlessly entertaining commentary by herzog (with commentator norman hill and a couple w/ crispin glover ["even dwarfs started small" & "fata morgana"], a longtime fan.) usually containing anecdotes about the shooting process, the actors involved and some reminiscences about his life at the time, and various explanations about what he's trying to do/why things must be as they are, etc. i've immensely enjoyed them. full of herzog's insights into cinema, his sense of humor and unique philosphy (i.e. god creating the world in anger, nature being vulgar, etc.). a few of the anchor bay dvd's also have short making-of documentaries, as well. however, there is no commentary for the documentaries("little dieter needs to fly", "my best fiend", etc.), though i'd recommend them nonetheless since they are fantastic. "woyzeck" for some reason (fictional film w/ kinski) appears to have no commentary. not sure why. as per kinski, he really is pretty much a lunatic. his "jesus christ superstar" performance at the beginning of "my best fiend" and what is supposedly a mild outburst during the shooting of "fitzcarraldo" (also seen in "my best fiend"), display a pretty volatile personality and if much of his autobiography can be believed ("kinski uncut"), he's a pretty extreme fellow. whether herzog has fluffed some of it up for a better story (like the aforementioned autobiography), is hard to tell. though it doesn't seem like kinski needs much help looking like a madman. and yes, the end of "stroszeck" is definitely one of the best endings of any movie i've seen. (i've actually considered making a pilgrammage to cherokee, north carolina where it was filmed.) .greg. Hey Steve, thanks for the info. - for those of us who just have some/most of the main releases of King Crimson - could you recommend 3 or 4 of your favorite from the 20 Collector's Club CD's that are now available, if there's any that really stand out in your opinion, I would appreaciate the input before I order... Upon moving to Boston in 1996, he soon became an integral member of the citys burgeoning experimental improvisation scene, garnering much praise for his unique vocabulary of extended techniques and timbral manipulation. In 1998, Kelley began a pattern of dedicated travelling, performing throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan. These travels have led to collaborations w/ a coterie of international artists including Pauline Oliveros, Anthony Braxton, Le Quan Ninh, Phil Minton, Joe McPhee, Gunter Muller, Paul Lovens, Keiji Haino, Eddie Prevost, Kevin Drumm, John Butcher, and Donald Miller. Meehan was born in the Bronx and resides in Times Square, New York City. He became musically active in the late 80's at the Amica Bunker series for improvised music which was then housed at ABC No Rio. At No Rio Meehan began performing and meeting other musicians, many of whom he still works with including Tamio Shiraishi, Paul Hoskin and Geoff Dugan. Meehan's interest in improvisation and collaboration has taken him around the world where he has performed solo and with other artists ranging from traditional instrumentalists to avant garde flower arrangers. He has performed throughout North America, South America, Asia and Eastern Europe. In 1994 he visited japan for the first time and returns regularly working with many musicians including Taku Sugimoto, Toshimaru Nakamura, Mamoru Fujieda, Sachiko M, Michihiro Sato, Tetzui Akiyama, Kiyoharu Kuwayama and many others. At home in New York Meehan has performed in the cities finest venues including ABC No Rio, the Victory Theatre, St Marks Church, Roulette, the Kitchen, The Whitney Museum and the Woodlawn cemetery to name a few. Current performances generally find Meehan using only the snare drum in a manner which sheds conventional usage and reconstructs the conception and function of the instrument. Meehans recordings include a CD of drumsolos (1991, NYCAC), a trio recorded in Japan with Michihiro Sato(shamisen) and Mamoru Fujieda (computer)(1994, trust).Other contributions to the material world include the construction of performance objects that act as "compositional things". Lang Thompson mentions looking forward to reading, among other things, Anthony Beevor's Stalingrad. It is a truly amazing and appalling book. It is a mixture of the historians eye for detail with the grand sweep of an epic film and a novelists sense of pace and story telling. Be warned some of the scenes will stay with you to the grave. You really do peep into the outer regions of hell. His new book on the fall of Berlin is, if anything, even more memorable. There is a slightly dubious suggestion as to the Russians determination to reach Berlin but the depiction of the sheer nightmare chaos and the unbelievable scale of killing are stunning. His uncovering of mass rape as a weapon is almost unreadable. I have no real interest in military history and these are the first books I have read in the genre but I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone. Richard Gardner
