OK here is the deal. This will not be for everyone but I thought there might be some of you out there that had things they would like to share but didn't have or didn't want to spend money on webspace. A friend of mine in China sends me files using this and it is absolutely free. I have uploaded a file to show you that it does work. The file is the other Boris Blank track on the Billy Mackenzie Maxi CD "Baby" Sacrifice And Be Sacrificed (Ch 8032 Mix). Laurens is having trouble posting to the list and asked me to post this for him: I have heard (from a good source) that you can run into some "pipeline" problems using bit torrents. Funny thing, it relates to the name itself, torrent. When you link to it, it's like tapping into a water main, you are sending (seeding) and receiving data (sponging). Your computer can handle only so much flow of information, and at a particular speed. The potential exists that should you latch into a torrent 'pipeline' that is superior in capacity and speed to your own, such as a fan of a particular band working at a huge corperation, and hacks into their computer to send and rec. his own files. The computer sees the outlet and starts seeding more than just what your buddy wants to send. They come gushing out ay an unbelievable speed and you can't stop it. your computer tries to grab all the data, but it comes at you way too fast and you have no control, all you can do is pull the plug. Then you have to mop up the mess of all the gunk that came flooding into your computer (aka debug, reformat,rebuild) before you can use your computer again, It is as bad as any virus out there, and I wouldn't be suprized if a good portion of viruses are making use of the bit torrents to mutate, propigate and flourish, then move on via the usual channels, as you cannot virus-scan the bit torrent sequence, (each packet of data that you are sending, receiving, sharing), until the complete file is in your computer (all the packets you need) If there were a reliable tap (flow control), and filter to verify that you only get what you want, and you only send out the packets of that particular file, not whatever is running through the torrent you signed into, then I would use them, but for now, there are too many unanswered questions, and unexpected goodies to make me comfortable using bit torrents right now. Seems like a lot of variables. Someone please post a file to a torrent so we can see if it works efficiently. Posting to some web-space still seems the best. We just need to find a place with free or really cheap web-space.

Why are torrents so slow? Is there a way of making them load faster? I have had 10MB files take hours to load. Please tell us more about torrents. If we create a torrent and then seed it (which I am not sure what that means) are people then downloading directly off our computer? They seem to be good in theory but I have not had good luck with torrents. More info please.

Hey, My wife and I were scanning through a few movie titles, and since my wife is a fan of Dancing, (all types), we checked out a movie called "THE COMPANY". A movie about a balet troup/company in Chicago, with Neve Campbell, Malcolm McDowel. It was a pretty slow film, but there are some fascinating dances in it. Uh, yeah, I just wanted to chime in on the "not so up on technical aspects of file formats" thread. S'true for me, too. I find the Mac vs. PC bickering here sometimes hideously tedious and sadly unnecessary. Just amazing how much some o' y'all git "hetted up" about such ephemera.
