WSLC General Session - Wednesday, January 29
Good Afternoon, Our next Women's State Legislative Council General Session will be this Wednesday, January 29 in the Copper Room. We will be discussing the listing of the sage grouse as endangered and Utah's air quality. This will be the first meeting with the legislature in session, so please leave enough time to find a parking space or to take public transportation. More details on your parking or transportation options can be found on our website at www.wslcofutah.org. Occasionally it is necessary to provide a LCD projector for our speakers' presentations. The Capitol's facilities office no longer rents them. If you have an LCD projector we can borrow on occasion will you please respond to this email and I will pass your information on to the Board. Also, please remember we will be discussing and amending the WSLC Bylaws during Wednesday's meeting. You will find a copy of the bylaws in an email I sent on January 22 or you will find them on the front page of our website: www.wslcofutah.org. Sylvia Rickard, Chair of the Handbook and Bylaws Committee, will be available at 9:00 AM before next week's meeting in the cafeteria outside the Copper Room to answer any questions members may have regarding the proposed changes. You are also welcome to contact her at 801-942-4941. The bulletin and minutes from the January 22 meeting will be sent to you when they become available. See you Wednesday, Jessica Christopher WSLC Corresponding Secretary
Good Afternoon, I have attached the minutes from last week's WSLC meeting. It was a good start to the session. I am also resending the agenda for tomorrow's meeting in the Copper Room at noon. We expect an excellent meeting discussing the listing of the sage grouse as an endangered specie and later a discussion on Utah's air quality. Both timely and important subjects. By way of reminder, tomorrow's meeting will be the first with the legislature in session, so please leave enough time to find a parking space or to take public transportation. More details on your parking or transportation options can be found on our website at www.wslcofutah.org. Occasionally it is necessary to provide a LCD projector for our speakers' presentations. Good Afternoon, Our next Women's State Legislative Council General Session will be this Wednesday, February 5 at noon in the Spruce Room (next to the Copper Room). Director Chris Bray and the Education Committee have invited Rep. Romero, Rep. Hughes, and Sen. Mayne to speak to us regarding teacher development, preschool funding, and paraeducator funding respectively. Please remember we will continue the amending of the bylaws, which you can find on our website: www.wslcofutah.org. I would encourage you to bring a copy of the document with you so it is a bit easier to follow along. According to our current bylaws all amendments to the bylaws must be noticed, or announced, the meeting before they are to be discussed. All of the amendments from the Bylaws and Handbook Committee have been noticed. Any amendments or changes directly related to the amendments proposed from the committee are in order. If you would like to propose an amendment not related to the committee amendments, you are welcome to do so, but you will need to bring them up during any General Session and they can be discussed the next week. Kitty Kaplan did this at the end of our Jan. 29 meeting. I have attached her proposed amendment regarding dues to this email. I have also attached a motion form you can use to make the amending process easier and more accurate. Also, we have several Executive Board positions open: Education Committee Co-Chair (needs to be a Republican) Health and Human Services Co-Chair (needs to be a Democrat) Judiciary Committee Co-Chair (needs to be a Democrat) The co-chairs assist the directors in following legislation and inviting speakers for our General Sessions. Please contact Kari Malkovich if you would be interested in filling one of the positions. Kari Malkovich klmalkovich@gmail.com 801-822-9149 I hope to see you on Wednesday for another outstanding and informative meeting, Jessica Christopher WSLC Corresponding Secretary
Good Afternoon, Our next Women's State Legislative Council General Session will be this Wednesday, February 12 at noon in the Spruce Room (next to the Copper Room). We will have a discussion on the age limit for tobacco products followed by a discussion on the Medicaid expansion. We will also continue the amending of the WSLC Bylaws. You can find a copy of the bylaws and proposed amendments on our website: www.wslcofutah.org. We have passed Articles I, II, and III and will begin the next discussion on page 17 with Article IV Officers. As you know, it has been a bit confusing during the discussions to know when a member is making a comment for or against an amendment or if the member is actually wanting to make a motion to amend or change the language of an amendment. Please be very clear if you would like to make a motion. Both the chair and the parliamentarian are available to help you. Because it is hard to hear, and to make sure we have the correct amendment language, please use the motion forms. One is attached to this email and they will be available during our meeting. Kathy Boyer, our Parliamentarian, has also offered to be available before next week's meeting (9:00 am - 10:30 am) in the cafeteria to help anyone prepare amendments. Again we will start the discussion will Article IV, page 17, and continue as long as time allows. Hilarie Orman, Director, has also introduced a fantastic new part of the WSLC website: www.wslcofutah.org. On the main page you will find NEW: The Participatory Citizen App. Clicking on this link will bring you to a page where you can enter your address to receive a list of your state elected officials. In addition to the elected officials you will find a list of bills we have discussed in WSLC and an option to send a supporting or opposing email directly to your elected representatives. Please visit the website, www.wslcofutah.org, and take advantage of this great tool. Thanks Hilarie! I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday for another outstanding and informative meeting, Jessica Christopher WSLC Corresponding Secretary
