Jim, I saw it rise over the mountain in Arizona last Friday night. It came up at about 11:50 pm and went across this "V' dip in the mountain. It looked like a bright star, about 3.7 mag. I saw it in Harlan's 10" Meade SCT. A very bright ball of stars like the picture you sent me. It was too low for my 15" dob but I did manage to see Centaurus A, NGC 5128. This is a bright peculiar galaxy with a dark lane running through the middle. You don't want to pass up this one. This one will show up in binoculars too. Up north at your Rush Valley site, I'd look for it at about 12 midnite. Try spotting it with your binoculars first. This is easier and you know you are on your target. I first looked at NGC 5139 through Mark Dakins' 20 X 80 binoculars at the Texas Star Party. I was not disappointed. When you look through your telescope, put in a low power eyepiece. This cluster is about the size of the full moon. I'd love to take a picture of it someday. Good Luck, Debbie
Thanks Deb I have NGC 5128 on the list to look for. Thanks againJim UTAHDEB@aol.com wrote:Jim, I saw it rise over the mountain in Arizona last Friday night. Just to play devil's advocate, how clear is it when it's that close to the horizon? Thanks, Joe Joe Bauman science & military reporter Deseret News bau@desnews.com (801) 237-2169
JoeIt has to be a moonles, cloudless night, and probably not a windy dusty day like we have had lately; thas all. Dave Bennett said he could see it from the Rush Valley site. I am hopeful.Jim Joe Bauman <bau@desnews.com> wrote:Just to play devil's advocate, how clear is it when it's that close to the horizon? I guess I was wondering if it's so close to the horizon that the atmosphere distorts it a lot. Thanks, Joe Joe Bauman science & military reporter Deseret News bau@desnews.com (801) 237-2169
Maybe it will make it bigger, like the moon. Joe Bauman <bau@desnews.com> wrote:I guess I was wondering if it's so close to the horizon that the atmosphere distorts it a lot. Yes, but it is so huge that you can sort of ignore everything else and just be amazed by it. I don't think it would photograph very well though. Even the photo that Jim posted, taken at the Grand Canyon, has some distortion in it. Joe, Unless you're really good, it not much more than a fuzzball with bright knots in it. The same is true with Centaurus A, at least from what I have seen from RV. Brent --- Joe Bauman <bau@desnews.com> wrote:

BrentWhat does a knot look like? I have heard this term used, but I wouldn't know a knot if I saw one.Jim Brent Watson <brentjwatson@yahoo.com> wrote:Joe, Unless you're really good, it not much more than a fuzzball with bright knots in it. Sorry, but here goes: A rope walks into a bar, and orders a drink. The bartender says "Get outa here. We don't serve your kind here." Next day, the rope tries again. He walkes into the bar and orders a drink. The bartender says "Didn't I tell you yesterday? We don't serve your kind here. Get out!" The next day, he ties mihself into a knot, and messes his hair up. Once more he walks into a bar and orders a crink. The bar tender looks at him a bit funny and says "Hey, aren't you that rope that came in here yesterday and the day before?" "Nope - I a frayed knot!" A knot is another way of indicating uneven brightness, sort of like lumpy light. These bright patches are called knots. Brent --- Jim Gibson <xajax99@yahoo.com> wrote:
