Jim,

I saw it rise over the mountain in Arizona last Friday night. It came up at
about 11:50 pm and went across this "V' dip in the mountain. It looked like a
bright star, about 3.7 mag. I saw it in Harlan's 10" Meade SCT. A very
bright ball of stars like the picture you sent me. It was too low for my 15"
dob but I did manage to see Centaurus A, NGC 5128. This is a bright peculiar
galaxy with a dark lane running through the middle. You don't want to pass up
this one. This one will show up in binoculars too.

Up north at your Rush Valley site, I'd look for it at about 12 midnite. Try
spotting it with your binoculars first. This is easier and you know you are
on your target. I first looked at NGC 5139 through Mark Dakins' 20 X 80
binoculars at the Texas Star Party. I was not disappointed. When you look
through your telescope, put in a low power eyepiece. This cluster is about
the size of the full moon. I'd love to take a picture of it someday.
