(Apparently a good thing I didn't try to go to the sun party on Saturday--insane work schedules have fragmented some parts of my brain and they haven't re-coalesced yet). So, anyone else see the flare? Thanks for the invitation, Patrick to see the sun via the 200mm Bogdan and the .5 Angstrom H-a filter. I'd love to have a look, but couldn't get away for the drive from Utah County. To others, I definitely recommend making the trip if you can. The activity on the sun the last few days has been great. I had a wonderful time showing neighbors yesterday afternoon; today one of the neighbors brought her granddaughter who's doing a report on the sun for her 1st grade class--she had a few looks through the Lunt today--a future member? If you are in UT county and want to drop by my place, send me an email directly and we'll see what we can work out--my measly 80mm Lunt gives good views but nothing like what you'd see w/ Patrick, no doubt. girl Scouts need a star party

Hi all, OAS has done star parties for a Girl Scout troop in Park City in the past. They have asked our club to do one this Nov 14 up in Provo canyon. This could turn out to be a 90 minute drive one way for us Ogden guys and we are agreed that we should try to hand it off to SLAS and the Provo club. It will be held at a camp for scouts so the facilities should be adequate. These are well attended (75 or so) and three or four instruments would be ideal. H-a solar flare about 30 mins ago near AR 2192

I was hoping to make the solar party today, but too much work to do. But I set up my Lunt 80mm H-a scope and just went out for a look occasionally. I happened to catch a flare (appears it was near AR 2192--assuming I'm oriented correctly on the diagrams). In any case, I hope people at the solar party were still set up and a lot of folks got to see it. I haven't had the Lunt even for a month and I caught a flare--very, uh, cool, I guess ;-) I was observing through thin and occasionally thicker clouds--the 80mm aperture really is great for suboptimal conditions. Rolling the C-14

Now that SLAS has a C-14 it might be a good idea to discuss how to move it around at SPOC. Looking online I see all manner of devices made for that purpose priced from "not to bad" to "you gotta be kidding". There's this simple approach: http://www.scoperoller.com/ScopeRoller11.shtml But there's also these: http://www.scopebuggy.com/Gen3/UntitledPandO.html Casters would be fine on the SPOC Walk but maybe the larger pneumatic tires might be better if we decide to wheel the scope away from the buildings and on to the lawn. A Big Sunspot Emerges / C-14 donated

Shown below is a message from Spaceweather.com that arrived today. Alpine had his solar scope set up at SPOC before the star party yesterday so several of us got to see the spot spaceweather is talking about and it really is HUGE! In other news, SLAS now owns a C-14 on a Losmandy G-11 mount, HD tripod and Celestron's Advanced Astro Master digital setting circles. Retail on all that is pushing $9,000. A fellow called David Nelson has been trying to sell the scope (it was listed here a few weeks ago) and when it did not sell he decided to donate it to SLAS. He dropped it off at SPOC last evening at the start of the star party. eyepiece inquiry

Hi all; I am donating a self-made 4" f4 dobsonian telescope to a local youth group for their upcoming fundraiser (silent auction). If anyone has a spare 1.25" eyepiece or two kicking around in their boxes of astro stuff, they would be a welcome addition to the scope.
