Pulsars, rapidly rotating highly magnetized neutron stars, were discovered in 1967 and continue to surprise and delight astronomers as powerful probes of fundamental physics and astrophysics. Fast radio bursts are millisecond-duration pulses of currently unknown origin that were dis- covered in 2007. Both pulsars and fast radio bursts have great promise at probing the universe on large scales and in fundamental ways. I will conclude the talk with a look ahead to the exciting prospects that may be possible in the next five years. About the Speaker: Duncan Lorimer received his PhD in Radio Astronomy in 1994 from the University of Manchester, UK for work on the Galactic population of pulsars. From 1994-1995 he was a lecturer in Radio Astronomy in Manchester. He held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Max Planck Institute fuer Radioastronomie in Bonn, Germany, from 1995-1998 before moving to the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico as a staff scientist from 1998-2001. He returned to Manchester as a Royal Society Research Fellow from 2001-2006 before settling at WVU in 2006. Amateur Astronomy half way around the world

Mauri, All, It has been a while, but I just wanted to let all my astronomy friends know I am alive and well. I am still doing star parties, but in Kiribati I am under a sky I am only half familiar with. It's so weird to see the northern constellations upside down. I was hoping to list some links to photobucket so you could see some of what's happening here, but I haven't figured out how to do it, yet. Any help? Maybe this will work: http://s1373.photobucket.com/?postlogin=true Please let me know. The lunar eclipse earlier this month was spectacular. We are located very close to where the maximum eclipse happened at zenith. I was able to get some nice pics through my 80 mm Orion short tube with my cell phone. We missed out completely on the partial solar eclipse, but I have been showing students and teachers the amazing sunspot group. This is the first telescope that anyone on this high school campus has ever looked through!! I very quickly realized that 80 mm just isn't going to cut it for deep sky objects. I was the only one who could see M31 through the 80 mm. So I took the bull by the horns (with my wife's somewhat reluctant permission) and ordered an Orion XT8 from Australia. The price wasn't unreasonable, 450 AUS, but the shipping was another 720 AUD! I hope to have it together and ready for first light in a few days. I've been told it may well be the biggest telescope on the island of Tarawa. I have to melt some lead fishing sinkers to counterbalance the Telrad. (Sorry, Brent, but I didn't order it from you.) I will donate both telescopes to the school when I leave in a year and a half. It feels good to read of your astronomical doings and goings-on. It brings me just a little closer to home. Air Force Wants to Expand Utah Test and Training Range

This was in the Salt Lake Tribune: http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/politics/58537219-90/amp-robinson-force-test.h… The USAF looks to take over some rather HUGE lands out in the West Desert. Those are some of the best local dark areas if one is willing to drive and the land includes Fish Springs and out near Simpson Springs as well. A rancher might get access but I wonder about an amateur astronomer. More loss of public land near Salt Lake City and the Pony Express Road out there will be lost as well. I bet in 30 years there will be very few dark sites left in northern Utah. I know the SQM project I am doing at four sites is showing a slight decline over the last several years. Jay

Very nice, Dave. I saw it through the clouds for a few minutes using solar glassrd and that sunspot cluster was so huge that I actually saw it without magnification. Partial Solar Eclipse

I'm surprised that there hasn't been any discussion of the partial eclipse this Thursday. I know I haven't been much of a contributor lately, but I actually found out about this through social media. I'm planning to be at Arches on the day of, anyone else doing anything interesting?
