Hard for me to believe that it's been 35 years since Voyager 1 launched 35 years ago today. And it's still operating. Way to go NASA! patrick

ATM report for the 9/1 session and also upcoming session dates

The session on 9/1 was a little more lightly attended than usual, but being the Labor Day weekend, that was not surprising. Daryl brought his 10" "Z" scope and this time added a 2" crayford focuser. That is a big improvement to the 1 1/4" R & P focuser it came with. He has made some real good improvements to this telescope. Daryl's plans for the scope next include either a fan system or an improved mirror cell. Charlie brought a 13" tile and plaster tool that he will use to grind the back flat on his 13" project. He will have to seal the plaster tool with polyurethane on the back and sides and I recommended that he melt paraffin wax into the tool from the tile side. This may keep the plaster waterproof enough that it will hold together long enough for the grinding. Jeff discussed ideas on how best to proceed with perfecting the polish and figure of the primary mirror from his 12" scope. He is ordering pitch, ceox, rouge, and dental stone from gotgrit. He plans on making the tool, pouring the pitch lap, and stripping the mirror coating prior to the next ATM session. That way he can use the machine to polish the mirror during the session. Which brings us to the next sessions. Here are dates that I am planning for the next several sessions (Saturday from 9:00AM to 2:00PM unless otherwise noted); 9/28 and 9/29 (another 2 day session. Grantsville Reservoir Friday, Sept 14th 2012 BSA Outreach

Just a friendly invite. If you don't have anything to do on Friday the 14th, there will be about 6 of us taking scopes up to the Grantsville Reservoir to show the deep sky objects to several scout troops up there. We'll be up in the campground area if you want to come out. It should be a fun night. I did this 3 years ago with them and it was a blast, a busy evening but a lot of fun. The following night we will be going south of Vernon to observe and anyone is welcome to come along. If you need directions to either let me know at jayleadsatgmaildotcom (fix it so it works right for email). 10" LX-200 Classic and other items for sale

I've recently upgraded my observatory telescope and mount so I have a few items that I'd like to sell. I'm certainly willing to deliver these items as far south as Provo. If you live further south than that - let's talk. 10" f6.3 Meade LX-200 Classic $1200 Includes telescope, field tripod, finder scope, 1.25 inch standard visual back, upgraded star diagonal, 25mm Meade Plossl eyepiece, 2x Celestron Ultima Barlow lens, 18 volt power supply, 12v to 18vdc converter - I haven't tested this recently, homemade dew shield, Meade motorized focuser, Losmandy 2D weight system (with 2.5 lb weight), Original owner's manual, original box and soft case. This LX-200 was made in 1997 and has been kept in the observatory since 2002. All electronics are currently in good working order but include no guarantee which is why this is priced at less than a new OTA. There are sources of replacement electronics available from 3rd party sources (which does not include Meade). This is the f6.3 model so no focal reducer is needed for CCD imaging. Optec TCF-S (Temperature Compensating Focuser - Serial) $500 This is a very "beefy" focuser for astrophotography. Includes focuser (which is compatible with Focusmax autofocus software), power supply, 2" to T-thread adapter, 2" to SCT thread adapter, hand controller, temperature probe.
