New moon from the Uintas

I didn't have time to go to Capitol Reef so I camped overnight in the Uintas, just near Bald Mt at about 10,000 ft (Lat,Lon 40.68754,-110.907226). I had great fun with the telescope (10" SCT) but didn't bring the cords to connect my battery so I had no clock drive all night. Oh well - I got some nice views of the Milky Way and planets. Io transit

I saw a transit of Io using the SLOOH scope. I noted that Jupiter was oblate in other words flattened at the poles. Went up to Wolf Creek Saturday night, and really lucked out. Transparency was excellent, seeing was OK, good for 200-300 power in the 18". Temp got down to 37 F. with very little wind. Observed until Orion came up and had some fun with Jupiter, too. Blue Snowball was a real treat. Best night under the stars all summer for me. -Van

Capitol Reef Report

All, Two nights at Capitol Reef were very good. The sky was clear both nights with a slight breeze and fairly mild temperatures. On Friday night, the seeing was not perfect with some turbulence apparent in the viewing. But the darkness was exceptional and the sky transparency was very good. Looking at objects near the zenith looked superb. On Saturday night, temperatures were fairly warm and until 1:00 AM there was no wind. The atmosphere was quite steady with a marked improvement over Friday night. I would say it was one of the best five nights I have ever had observing. Lowell had his 20-inch Obsession there and bumped up to 500 magnification with good views of the ring nebula showing the central star. When Jupiter first appeared above the hill to the east, it was fairly turbulent because of the heat waves associated with the hill. Within about ½ hour, the views improved and detail could be seen. No observer could see any sign of the meteor impact that occurred earlier in the week. In attendance were David Bernson, Nate Goodman, Kevin and David Hayes, Rob Taylor, Lowell and Linda Lyon, Brittney ?, Ann and Christy House, Bill and Jackie Kennedy and Connie and I. Everyone had a very good time with some hiking and sightseeing in the day time and astronomy at night.

ISS this morning

I caught what had to be the ISS pass over this morning at about 5:45 AM. At peak brightness, it rivaled Venus. As it dropped lower in the NE, it turned decidedly red. Pretty cool.

Nice. Joe. BTW, yesterday, Dan took Carol and me over the old Lucin cutoff from Promontory to Wendover as part of a group of vehicles doing research on the associated ghost towns and sidings. Question: While driving South on Pilot Mtn road (which took us past the sun tunnels-- our first visit there), maybe some 20 or 30 miles North of the entrance road to the salt flats, we passed some vehicles and a motor home on a rise to the West.
