Sorry Joe (and no offense please, but) I was pretty disappointed in your article. I felt you gave way too much press to Buttars and the ID side and too little and rather muddled coverage of the other. I also didn't find a single quote from anyone on this list (did I miss it?). And to take exception to one point -- since when is Neanderthal considered "fully human"? Modern DNA has proven otherwise; yes we had a common ancestor, but we did not descend from them (which you did point out -- it just seemed contradictory). And I've yet to hear from ANYONE what on earth these people think they can occupy an entire semester of science class actually teaching on the subject of ID. I still say the lecture will only last a few minutes, and then there's nothing more to discuss. Bright Moon

I was hoping to image a globular cluster last night but I couldn't get a decent polar alignment. I turned the scope to the moon hoping to get at least one picture for my effort. The best picture turned out to be the Auto Exposure mode. It took a 1/50th of a second shot with an ISO of 100. If I remember correctly - when Harry was working on his star chart for his astronomy O.W.L. (in Order of the Phoenix) - he was observing Venus well after midnight! Hi Emalee-- Welcome to the list. Just so you know, we drag the topic off into the weeds every now and then, but it's always fun to be here. It's hard to disagree with Cynthia's recommendation of a 6" dob, but let me throw in a penny's worth. You'll always have a need for a decent pair of binoculars, something like 7x50s or 10x50s. They're extremely helpful learning your way around the sky, and maybe even more helpful when you've got some experience. Because they've got a large field of view, you're still able to relate what you see in the binos to what you see naked-eye. Then bring your binos out to SPOC and mooch off other people's scopes for a while. That will help you focus (unintentional astronomy joke) on exactly what you might want in a scope of your own. Hmmm... Hogwarts is supposed to be somewhere in Scotland and O.W.L.'s would be taken around the beginning of June (I think it was). Aerial lens

Only those who have been SLAS members for a very long time will remember that back in the 70s SLAS received a donation of several 4" f/6 aerial lenses. I thought they had all disappeared long ago but while cleaning out the SPOC dome today I found one of those old lenses mounted in a tube with a focuser attached. I checked with SPOC superintendent Bruce Grim who said that if anyone wanted it they could have it. No charge (but donations to SPOC will not be refused). It can be picked up at SPOC or I can bring it to the SLAS meeting next week. Any takers? Patrick
