Rush Valley, Wednesday night

Mike Bailey and I got out to Rush Valley last night for a few hours. It was chilly with occasional gusts, but not a bad night at all. There was a bit of dodge'em with some clouds, but still plenty to see. Limiting magnitude was just a bit past 5.0--not fantastic, but still pretty darn good for a former New Englander. I saw and photographed a beautiful pair of sundogs just as I got around Eagle mountain. As a relatively recent arrival, I have no idea how common they are here, but it's the first time I've ever seen them. Each 'dog' was a little rainbow. Cool. There are are many nice pairs in Ursa Major. Among my favorite pairs are the Arp galaxies NGC 3718 and NGC 3729. There is a nice picture of the pair in the May 2005 Sky and Telescope, page 79. It looked good in my 15" and great in Jim's 25" scope last month. The Arp galaxy NGC 3738 and NGC 3756 is also a nice pair, although they are not Herschel objects. I spent some time in Ursa Major last June looking at all the galaxies in the bowl of the Big Dipper. I really like the little spiral galaxy NGC 3184 in Leo Minor too. It is a pretty easy starhop from Mu Ursa Majoris. Observing report from Rush Valley Tuesday

Hi all, Four of us braved the cold Tuesday until frost crashed the party just after midnight. Transparency was so-so, the ground was perfectly dry, but the cold air brought very steady seeing, and the views of Jupiter's colorful festoons at 423x in the 16-inch (using my "new" $10 swap meet 6mm Celestron Ortho (thanks Patrick!)) were superb. For me it was also a very productive night; I logged 34 more Herschel-400 objects, all galaxies (most of them in Leo Minor, Ursa Major and vicinity) save NGC 4361, a PNe in Corvus (central star was easy). Highlights were NGC 3294, 3432, 3813, 3877, 3675, 3726, 3198, 3184, and 3556 (aka M108). 7 of the log sketches show pairs of galaxies, not uncommon in this part of the sky. The ground was nice and dry by the way, for any who might be wondering. IC410 Ha Image from the Pit-n-Pole

Hi all. A few of us made it to the pit-n-pole on Tuesday night. It was cold but conditions were pretty good. I spent most of my evening imaging IC410, an excellent Hydrogen-alpha object with lots of dark lanes, located in Auriga. It is very near M36 and M38. I have attached a link to the thumbnail image. OT- Job Opening - Photographer for Autotrader - Davis and Weber counties

My supervisor, also an amateur astronomer, has asked me if I know anybody in the area between Bountiful and Ogden that might be interested in working as a Photographer for Autotrader Magazine in that area. I don't personally "know" a lot of people on this list, but thought I'd throw this out there to see if any list members or their friends might be interested. I don't know the specifics on the job opening, but I work as Photographer for the west side of the SL Valley. I work 30 hours per week, 4 days per week, but Autotrader gives full-time benefits. Pay is strictly commission and varies enormously, and I drive my own car an average of about 75 miles per day for business purposes.
