The China Humanities Seminar is pleased to present: Nicolas Tackett University of California, Berkeley The Mechanics of Cultural Change in China in a Period of Disunity Date: [ x-apple-data-detectors://4 | Monday, Oct. ] [ x-apple-data-detectors://4 | 5th, 2020, 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm (EDT) ] Situated at the epicenter of the “Tang-Song Transition,” the tenth-century interregnum between the Tang and Song dynasties was a period of rapid change. This talk will focus on the dramatic evolution of Chinese political culture, as reflected in new political ideals, new ideas of Chinese space, and a new elite sense of identity. What underlying mechanisms account for these developments? Datasets and examples taken from an on-going book project suggest that cultural change was spurred by the particularities of the tenth century as a period of disunity. Although Chinese civilization has evolved continuously throughout its long history, change during periods of disunity was driven by distinct causative factors, which included political instability, inter-regime competition, elite migrations, not to mention the process of reunification itself. Nicolas Tackett (B.S., Stanford University; Ph.D., Columbia University) is Professor of History at U.C. Berkeley. He is the author of two books. The Destruction of the Medieval Chinese Aristocracy (2014) examines how a network of powerful families survived at the pinnacle of political power for centuries only to disappear into oblivion suddenly and completely at the turn of the 10th c. The Origins of the Chinese Nation (2017) argues that a national consciousness emerged in China in the eleventh century (i.e., much earlier than typically assumed), and explores how this new consciousness was a product of the diplomatic environment of 11th-c. Northeast Asia. This event is generously sponsored by the Mahindra Humanities Center and Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations, Harvard University. The sponsorship includes small subventions for individual panelists, including travel and registration expenses. Panels may be presenting on site or virtually. Note that AAS has removed the panel sponsorship option from its panel proposal form. In line with that, the Society will entertain panel sponsorship applications AFTER panels have been accepted for inclusion in the AAS Annual Meeting program. Moreover, since AAS extended its panel proposal and notification deadlines by two weeks, the T'ang Studies Society application deadline likewise has been extended. These essays are engaged in historically nuanced close reading of Du Fu’s poems, both canonical and less known, from new angles and in various contexts, and discuss a series of critical issues, including the local and the imperial; the body politic and the individual body; poetry and geography; perspectives on the complicated relation of religion and literature; materiality and contemporary reception of Du Fu; poetry and visual art; and tradition and modernity. Many of the poems discussed in this book were written in the backwater town of Kuizhou, far from Du Fu’s earlier residence in the capital city Chang’an, at a time when the Tang dynasty was going through devastating social and political disturbances. The authors contend that Du Fu’s isolation from the elite literary establishments allowed him to become a pioneer who introduced a new order to the Chinese poetic discourse. However, his attention to details in everyday reality, his preoccupation with domestic life and the larger issues embroiled in it, his humor, and his ability to surprise tend to be obscured by the clichéd image of the “poet sage” and “poet historian”—an image this collection of essays successfully complicates. With generous support from the Tang Research Foundation, the T’ang Studies Society is pleased to announce funding for grants to support research by society members in any discipline on the Tang dynasty in a broad geographical and chronological scope. The grants can support various types of expenses that arise during research including travel, book purchases, graduate assistants, and databases fees.
