Best regards, Jonathan Skaff Secretary T’ang Studies Society http://tangstudies.org/Membership.html ************************************************************************************* The Georgetown-IDP Lecture Series: Following the Silk Roads to North America was organised to celebrate the upcoming completion of the Georgetown-IDP Project<http://idp.bl.uk/archives/news_current/news_current.a4d#section2>, which has worked to incorporate images of Silk Road items in North American collections into the International Dunhuang Project’s public database<http://idp.bl.uk/>, based at the British Library, and to expand the IDP's partnership with North American institutions. Generously supported by the Henry Luce Foundation and the Dunhuang Foundation, the project began in 2016, and since then has brought together more than 30 North American institutions and over 1,300 objects. The lecture series is supported by the Henry Luce Foundation. Co-organized by Georgetown Art and Art History faculty member Michelle C. Wang, five lectures are scheduled on consecutive Wednesdays beginning July 28 (most starting at 1:00pm EST, the first one starting at 2:00pm EST) and will be held over Zoom. Situated on a beautiful 72-acre waterfront preserve on Little Sarasota Bay, the Center’s research library includes a spacious lecture hall accommodating up to 60 people and smaller meeting rooms configurable for 20 people. Wifi is available throughout the facility. The Center also has a large kitchen as well as indoor and outdoor seating areas suitable for receptions, meals, and breaks. Lodging is available on site free of charge for up to five participants, subject to availability. The library itself houses more than 60,000 volumes covering every period of Chinese history from ancient times to the modern era and an extensive collection of more than 300 scholarly journals from around the world. Areas of concentration include medieval China from the fourth through tenth centuries, pre-modern peoples and languages of Central and Inner Asia, and poetry of the Tang Dynasty, a field in which Elling O. Analects for Women a forgery?

Dear Colleagues: In a 1994 article on Wu Zhao that appears in *Imperial Rulershp and Cultural Change in Traditional China*, Chen Joshui mentions the late Tang Song sisters and the composition of the 女論語. Then in a footnote he says, "This text is apparently a later forgery," explaining that the Xin Tangshu and Jiu Tangshu both say the work was "written in the form of dialogues between ancient learned and virtuous women," (which is not true of the existing version) and adding that the "present version contains twelve chapters, whereas the original work had ten." Does anyone know more about this? I have looked online (in English and Chinese) and in sourcebooks that include translations of the 女論語, and have seen no other mention that it may be a forgery. But I have to say that, looking at it that with that perspective, there are some good reasons (especially its emphasis on chastity) to think it might well be. Any insights would be appreciated! While scholarship in the past has tended to concentrate on only one side of the Northern and Southern Dynasties histories and literatures, we hope to expand our view from the simple binary model of north and south to include the multiple sites of power and to emphasize the multi-polarity of this age from a decentered perspective. How did the master narratives of different court centers compete with one another? How did individual, clan, and state negotiate with the violent changes of the times and with one another at this particular historical juncture? How did the machinery of the state deal with a newly unified empire after nearly three hundred years of division? What can we gain as medievalists if we examine the limitations of our tools and methodologies imprinted with the modern disciplinary divide and its theoretical underpinnings? The China Humanities Seminar is pleased to present: Wu Hung University of Chicago Unearthing Wu Daozi (c. 686 – c. 760) Date: Tuesday, April 13th, 2021, 4:00pm to 5:45pm (ET) Worshipped by later folk artists as the God of Painting, Wu Daozi (c. 686 – c. 760) was also praised by Tang art historian Zhang Yanyuan as someone who “did not look back and will have no successors.” But alas this Sage of Painting (Hua Sheng) left no work to us (imagine if we could only read about Leonardo da Vinci or Michelangelo, or know Du Fu and Li Bo only by reputation). Can archaeology remedy this unfortunate situation as it has done for so many other fields from classical philosophy to ancient science? This talk suggests that a set of newly discovered imperial tomb murals (so new that they are still being conserved in a museum lab) may allow us to approach Wu’s style more closely than ever before, and also leads us to problematize the concept of authorship in Tang painting. Wu Hung is the Harrie A. Vanderstappen Distinguished Service Professor of Art History and the College at the University of Chicago.
