Dear Friends and Colleagues in Tang Studies, I am writing to you to report the very sad news that our esteemed colleague and friend Harry Rothschild passed away this past Friday, December 10, 2021. The field of Tang Studies has lost an important scholar too soon. More importantly, many have lost a close friend. I know that I speak for all of us in expressing the certainty that we will keep his family and loved ones in our thoughts during their time of grief. Virtual reality, augmented reality, and 3D digital environments are witnessing explosive growth in research and teaching, but faculty and staff who could benefit from these techniques do not have equal access to the tools they need. Hardware and software used in the creation of 3D environments is expensive; institutional policies and commitment are highly variable; and some who would benefit lack confidence with the technology. The Immersive Global Middle Ages Institute provides a diverse cohort of medievalists with both theoretical and practical training in the creation and implementation of 3D objects and environments for research and teaching. The Institute will meet online three times each semester and will have two in-person four-day summer workshops over a two-year period (January 2022-November 2023). By the end of the Institute, participants will have considered the research around using 3D environments, developed 3D object assets and worlds, and authored teaching resources to pass on their new skills to students and colleagues. Given that many participants will lack the necessary robust computing hardware and software needed to participate in the workshops, the Institute will award technology stipends to participants for the purchase of an Alienware computer customized for immersive technology, monitor, keyboard/mouse, and a 3-year onsite support/warranty; an Oculus Rift headset; and a two-year license for Trimble SketchUp Pro modeling software. Recovery of Manichaean manuscripts in the twentieth century and their eventual publication has transformed our understanding of the origins of the Manichaean movement, its prominence and geographical spread in Late Antiquity, and the threat it posed to Nicene Christianity not only by its beliefs but also by the ascetic practice of its elite core. The China Humanities Seminar is pleased to present: Scott Pearce Western Washington University Looking Behind the Text: The Case of Northern Wei’s “Yuan Pi” Date: Monday, October 25th, 2021, 4:00 pm to 5:45 pm (EST) All textual traditions are based on their own particular sets of assumptions and preoccupations. This was the case of the Chinese classical tradition as well, which having taken full shape under the Han empire, continued to be used as the only available language of written record by the very different regimes that controlled the Yellow River plains after Han collapse. One of these was Northern Wei (386-534), a new kind of empire in East Asia, of Inner Asian origin, whose leadership for generations continued to speak an Inner Asian language and conceptualized the world in terms apparently quite different from those embedded in the Literary Chinese that gives the only descriptions we have of these people and their actions. Here we use the case of a royal kinsman called in the text “Yuan Pi 元丕” (422-503) to examine various ways in which we might attempt to look behind (or through, or under) received text to get a glimpse at least of the actual man. Trained in the history of China, inner Asia, and Japan, and in Chinese thought and religion, Scott Pearce specializes in dynasties of Inner Asian origin that ruled northern China during the 4th through the 6th centuries CE. He has just completed a book on the first major example of such regimes, the Northern Wei (386-534). From this work come scholarly and teaching interests in many related issues, such as the encounter and interaction of cultures, military history, and the arts and poetic forms of East Asia and worlds beyond. Asia in Depth Healing with Poisons: The Circulation of Medical Knowledge in Medieval China Dr. Yan Liu, SUNY, Buffalo, Oct. 7, 5:00-6:30pm EDT During China’s formative era of pharmacy, poisons were strategically deployed as healing agents to cure everything from chills to pains to epidemics. Focusing on the early Tang period (7th and 8th centuries), this talk illustrates how the court regulated the use of poisons and commissioned new medical treatises to achieve effective governance. It further demonstrates how local people in Dunhuang in present-day Gansu Province in northwestern China adapted such texts, in both form and content, to meet their specific needs. By tracing the flow of medicinal substances in the Tang empire, this talk highlights the entwined processes of the rise of authoritative, standardized medical knowledge and its fluid transformations in local regions. Call for Papers for Conference on Tang-Song Transitions

Call for Papers for Conference on Tang-Song Transitions, June 2022. From Professors Anna Shields and Robert Hymes Since 2015 the annual Workshop on Tang-Song Transitions has been the venue for innovative and interdisciplinary work on the multiple changes encompassing the eighth through thirteenth centuries in China. For June 16-18, 2022, we plan a larger three-day conference at Princeton University to deepen our discussions and extend them in new directions. We envision as many as eight topical panels, typically of four papers each, ranging across multiple fields, comprising scholars of all ranks including advanced PhD students, and scheduled sequentially so that all Conference participants are present at every panel. Topics on which we would welcome contributions include: literary culture; society and social change; religious culture and practice; institutions and institutional history; art and architecture; regional differences and dynamics; interactions with or among border states and peoples; historiography and the problem of “ transition. ” On these or other pertinent topics we invite individual-paper abstracts or whole-panel proposals (in the latter case with abstracts of all included papers), with individual papers to be assembled into panels by the organizers. Panels will not include dedicated discussants, as on the model of the Workshop we expect discussion to come from the whole group of participants. Because the focus of the Conference is on the problem of change from Tang through Song, each paper should draw on sources from at least two of three historical periods: Tang, tenth century, and Song. The Conference will continue the practice of the Workshop, which has been to require papers and relevant primary texts to be submitted to the Conference website for circulation a month before we meet; panel time will thus be dedicated to the discussion of papers rather than their presentation. Transportation, lodging, and meals will be covered for all accepted panelists. We also welcome attendance by interested guests of all academic ranks, space allowing.
