Shawn, Two sheets with bowline each sheet at the clew. Flailing hardware can make a mess of crew and mast not to mention getting hung up on shrouds and stays. Switch sheets end for end every time you sail and you maximize the amount of use you will get from the sheets. I use from 3/16 on up, depending on the sail and conditions - also favor non water absorbing materials. I am a bit extreme in sizing to the small side - gloves are usually needed, but it keeps me sails a flyin' in the light stuff! (I used 5/32 for my spinn. sheets at Havasu event and they handled the 15 kts we had on Sunday morning) Crew sometimes complains BUT they always make me look good! Mainsail downhaul is redundant and complicated. K.I.S.S. - I have switched from almost all cordage terminal hardware (shackles etc.) to using knots - cheap - light - fast and the way they have done it for centuries! Try tying a stopper knot (figure eight) at the end of the halyard - make sure it is tight - then pass the stopper knot thru the headboard and tie a landlubberly overhand knot in the line around the headboard cringle - make sure the overhand knot is tight at the stopper - seems like marlinspike heresy, but it works very well and will not shake out if properly done. - I use a stopper ball above the knot to prevent the halyard from falling into the mast sheave when (not "if") it gets away. When I bought Motu iti the jib sheets had a large snap shackle attached to the center of tjhe sheets, that way you can use the same sheets with your jenny, working jib, or storm sail. Didnt see any need in changing it. Wire to rope: how I rigged it for now

I like Bob's idea of changing out for all line and doing away with the wire. There was even more of a cluster on my main halyard than I initially described: Small shackle permanently attached to the wire. Block attached to the shackle. Snap shackle attached to the rope, which wound around the block and then the snap shackle clipped back on the rope. Thus, the battle of the bulge up top. I don't know why I ignored it so long! As a temporary measure, today I removed all the "middleware" so that I just have the mainsheet tied to the shackle on the wire with a buntline hitch. That particular knot is reputed to be very secure even when a line is flapping around. What would be better would be an eye splice, and If I had Larry Yake's talent in that department I would try it. BUT, I found out about a product made in Washington State called a SplicingNut. It allows one to make an eye splice on a halyard with a few twists. Very cool. Also not cheap. Looks like my masthead sheave will accomodate 1/4" line with a little coaxing; 3/16" maybe would be easier. That's where I need to go, but I may try this splicing nut idea and see how it works out.
