Raising mainsheet block cleat for easier release

I was enjoying a fun, lively sail on Lake Michigan yesterday when a lull in the wind, followed by a hard gust, knocked me over a good bit. Part of the problem was that I was on the leeward side at the time, adjusting the jib sheet, away from my usual windward position (in gusty conditions, with one foot near the mainsheet cleat if I need to release it quickly). The low position of the cleat, and the downward pull needed to release the sheet, can make it difficult to release the sheet quickly. The situation has me wanting to raise my mainsheet cleat higher off of the cockpit floor to facilitate quicker release from anywhere in the cockpit. I've tried doing this using a loop of line or shackles, but the problem with that is that the block, shackles and whatever else bang around like crazy when I'm reaching or running in light and/or sloppy conditions. Has anyone developed a solution? Thanks! Gordon

Hi Gordon, On my 1985 M15, I have a swivel cam cleat with bullseye that, I don't know, may have been original equipment. The stainless plate to which both the cleat and bullseye are attached has bent down, resulting in more effort (more leaning down) to secure the mainsheet when I need to do so. I've bent the ss plate up a couple of times but you can only bend ss so much before it will break. For a visual, the my current hardware looks very much like the Harken model 240 (look on Defender). Rather than replace with a new 240, after talking with a Harken rep I have decided for the purposes you mentioned, to go with a combo ratchet block and angled cam swivel base. Prbably something like the Harken #1235 ratchet block attached to the #144 swivel cam cleat. This will should only provide a better angle of control for the skipper, but also more purchase in ratcheting in the main under sporting conditions and close points of sail. All it takes is money :-( What say the rest of you M15 sailors? Any other ideas? Neil / 1985 M15 / Roseville CA

Hello Martha, Both of my Montgomery sailboats have weathered Minnesota winters fine. They have never seen heated storage. Just don't leave liquids aboard. Tarp the boat and clear snow and ice from the top to keep the weight low. Also, remove all items that the little field mice would like to chew. Theo left sails aboard his boat in outdoor storage and the little buggers gave him some free vent holes. Start your search soon, M-boats can be difficult to find used. Good luck! Hi Martha, The problem with the weight is that it slows you down. The problem with 4 people in the cockpit is there is no room to move the tiller. OK if you don't want to turn. We left "Justus" outside last winter. no cover (other than snow). We live high in the Rockies at 10,000' altitude. Had no problems with the boat. Hi Daniel, I guess you could say "you came to the right place" regarding information on Montgomery designs and boats. Folks hangin' out here know more. They're linked together by the concept, designs and boats from the late Lyle Hess and Jerry Montgomery. My wife and I recently purchased an old (1986 Jerry Montgomery built) M15. We also went through the same thought process as I guess most Monty owners do. Jerry Montgomery designs are special. Focused on pocket cruisers, the result is evident. Mike Mann actually sailed a M15 to Hawaii from California. Whether built by Jerry Montgomery or Bob Eeg, the build quality will be very good. Safety and performance is high on the design and construction values We would recommend the M15 as a good vehicle for the pocket cruiser experience. We also understand that the Potter group are better at pocket cruiser social interaction.
