Hi, My name is Michael Mann and in 1982, I sailed the Montgomery 15, Little Breeze from CA to Hawaii. I see on the web site that she has been rescued by new owners in Hawaii and I would love to correspond with them. Montgomery Sailboats are in high demand

And are built with top-notch quality. There is nothing in the market place faster, better built and as good looking as a Montgomery Sailboat. I don't run a factory; I run a very small boatshop. I built to order on a boat by boat basis. I do a lot of custom work when asked. Bronze ports, Stainless ports, extra ballast, Custom electrical systems, Idasailor rudders, anchoring packages..etc. This work is labor intensive. Quality takes time. I have 3 employees. These people are highly experienced in Laminating, construction, assembly and finish. Woodworking and other skills result in a absolutely beautiful sailing vessel. I use the best sails the best rigging, the best custom stainless fasteners..and yes....(laughing) the best cushions. This last 15 months have been EXTREMELY busy; hiring new help was impossible because all the good people are gone. We had a tremendous BACKLOG and we caught a break only when Pacific Seacraft employees (let go) began filtering into our shop looking for work. We did add some additional crew in the Laminating Shop and because of that we are caught up. Pacific Seacrafts Bankruptcy was good for us. Bad for the dozens of good people who are out of work. The FIRST question of anyone buying a new boat should be 'How is the construction quality'? First and foremost that is the most important issue. I can say that everyone has experienced and will continue to experience a BACKLOG of orders; especially if the boat is as popular as a Montgomery Sailboat. When we had an 8 month backlog and I actually turned down 2 M_17 orders so we could catch our breath. It is impossible to work any harder or any faster. Now that were caught up we can get back to our normal 50-70 days (depending on model and options). Also custom work really adds to the production time. One beautiful M_17 we did we cut the V berth out of and installed an oval bulkhead, custom shelves and inline potti area; with 4 bronze ports she is an amazing boat, but custom work takes time. Expect delays if you go radical on the interior. (I think BONES has a photo of that one...) We are really one of the only builders that entertain changes and options to satisfy the customer. This new Passagemaker M_17 were building (and installing a windvane on tomorrow) is going to be amazing. Other actual boat factories that produce boats for DEALERS (that Tod mentioned) like Precision and Compac are built on Factory Production lines for a large Dealership Network. Dealers who have these boats in stock can supply them right away. But ask for major changes on a future production boat and the wait will be many months. International Marine builds boats faster with more employees but those boats are piss poor sailers (upwind) and many arrive with a list of problems that are pathetic. That's not me. So try not to focus on the TIME factor. We can only go so fast. Hiring additional help is not an option because by the time you train someone the season gets slow and you have to lay them off. I can't do that. I have people that have been with me for 20 years; I keep us small and efficient on purpose. So be surprised if we hit the delivery time; which we do quite often. Be a little disappointed when we miss it; but get over it when you see your boat. Dozens of you know me; you've arrived to see me rig your boat, pack you up and shake your hand. (Heck...Gary Hyde even brought me a bottle of wine..!..Thanks Gary.!) One man bought a new M_15 from us and a new M_17 a year later.! The C word...Cushions. I inspect everyboat before it leaves for home. Scott's boat was leaving for the Bay Area early Friday morning; I was at the boatshop at 10:30 PM Thursday night, sleeping at the picnic table just inside the door, waiting for the cushion guy to arrive with the (late) promised cushions. He drove up, woke me up and I watched as he stacked them on the deck. We left. My man arrived at 3AM and hooked up the boat and slid the cushions inside the boat. I should have loaded them myself then I would have noticed they looked good but didn't have the required 'Squeeze' factor. Let's move on, shall we....? Fair winds Bob Eeg (949) 489-8227 Boat Builder

The stainless plate to which both the cleat and bullseye are attached has bent down, resulting in more effort (more leaning down) to secure the mainsheet when I need to do so. I've bent the ss plate up a couple of times but you can only bend ss so much before it will break. For a visual, the my current hardware looks very much like the Harken model 240 (look on Defender). Rather than replace with a new 240, after talking with a Harken rep I have decided for the purposes you mentioned, to go with a combo ratchet block and angled cam swivel base. Prbably something like the Harken #1235 ratchet block attached to the #144 swivel cam cleat. This will should only provide a better angle of control for the skipper, but also more purchase in ratcheting in the main under sporting conditions and close points of sail. All it takes is money :-( What say the rest of you M15 sailors? Any other ideas? Pardey Effect

First, let me rename the subject line of my tale to "The Montgomery Effect" About 15 years ago, during the Annapolis Sailboat Show, I attended a slide show presentation (before powerpoint) of Lin & Larry Pardey's sail around the world in "Seraffyn". I remember how much they emphasized their mistrust in roller furling systems (although this was so long ago that I'm sure they've improved but it is consistent with KISS principle)... After the presentation I hoped to have a signed copy of my very worn copy of "Cruising in Seraffyn", at the last minute I also took along a pic of "Spoonful"..;.. Well, I think 90% of the audience had the same intentions in the packed auditorium. So many people that Lin & Larry had to split up and sign copies of their newest book and two separate, long lines. Luckily, I had sat close to the back and was able to be about the 20th or so person in Larry's line. When I did walk up to Larry I presented him with my book and the pic was on the title page. When he saw the photo of my Montgomery 17 he immediately stopped, called Lin over and Larry said "Remember Jerry Montgomery?" and her face showed almost instant recognition (amazing to me when you consider the thousands of people they've met around the world). He showed the pic and said "this is one of Jerry Montgomery's boat's". They both smiled and looked at it together, making nice comments here and there... During the probably 30 sec. this occured (to me I was in heaven) I was very aware of the all the sailors in line wondering what could this guy have to be a show stopper for Lin & Larry Pardey....I haven't told this to too many people because only Montgomery sailor's could appreciate the significance of what the Pardey's attention to a Montgomery sailboat means...Also, I'm not sure where I heard this, but I understand Jerry gave them an anchor when they first took off in "Seraffyn".... Considering an M 15

Hello, all! I just joined, but do not own a M 15. I currently sail a Vagabond 14 dinghy. Nice little boat, and for a dinghy, pretty stable with her chined hull and wide beam. I have her rigged nicely to single hand, and she is easy to launch and sail. But... My wife just doesn't feel too safe in it when I sail in good wind, such as Tomales Bay in California. So, I am considering a pocket cruiser, and the M 15 looks terrific. So, a few questions: 1) Why the M 15 over the WW Potter 15? The M 15 looks much better to me, but gotta ask. 2) Anybody in Northern California near Santa Rosa willing to show me their boat, or better yet, take me out for a demo? I will supply snacks and premium wine as I live in Sonoma County! I would really like to see one of these boats before considering buying one. I am a 50 year old ophthalmologist in good shape, and like to think I would be good company... 3) I figure finding a used one will be tough. So, I would consider buying a new one. Had a few emails with Bob Eeg of NorSea, and he seems very nice and straightforward. Any words of wisdom when dealing with buying a new one? Thanks so much for your help! Daniel Rich

Kentucky Lake cruise

Light air headsails

Julie and I had a short cruise last weekend on the west end of Lake Ontario. 3 nights out. 2 in marinas, 1 at anchor. 35nm total distance. Quite bit of light air, especially on Monday. Got me thinking about options to use in place of my genoa for reaching. I looked throught the list archives and saw suggestions for symettrical, asymettrical, drifters, reachers. Are drifters and reachers really just another term for an asymettrical spinnaker? I am thinking of something with a wire luff to allow it to fly forward of the forestay. Maybe a 12-18" pennant from the stem head. Has anyone used the top of the bow pulpit? I don't think it would be an off the shelf item. Can anyone offer suggestions or experience with this type of sail on their M17? What would be the suggested square footage? Thanks Bill M17 #623 Makin' Time
