Brad, Very useful info, thanks. Yes, I had heard about the Potter Yachters. When I was researching what boat I wanted to get, at first I thought I wanted a P19. Then realized I would have garage storage issues. Then looked at P15 and decided I wanted more built-in ballast and secondary stability than it offers. Further poking around the sailing web sites led me to the m_boats. I've seen some of the Potter Yachters' outing photos and they look like a fun group. I will check out there schedule as well as the Richmond inner harbor Thanks again Neil

Lake Oroville

To Nor Cal sailors: FYI I was contemplating taking the boat up to Lake Oroville (never been) on Friday and was concerned about the lake level and launch ramp accessibility. So I called the State Parks office up there and they advised me that the concrete ramp at Bidwell Canyon was still accesible. Folsom on the other hand, though nearby, is another story. Whisker pole mounting point on M17

Good morning all, So far it is looking like a nice start to September in this area (Ontario). We are heading to Lake Champlain for Labor Day weekend till later in the week. Then up to the Ottawa River at Arnprior. I have looked through the list archives searching for whisker pole info. Some references to the different types of poles (mostly Forespar). My question is how do I determine the vertical height on the mast to install a fitting to hold the inboard end? Has anyone a done this, or have a link to refer me to so I can calculate it? I am thinking to just put a single eye, instead of a short length of track. Thanks, Bill Wickett M17 #622

M15 Boom Vang

Looking for input on most cost effective boom vang for my 1985 M15, which currently does not have one. The tangs are already on the mast and boom. I was looking on the Harken site and also West Marine. These things can get expensive, especially when moving from those using up to 1/4" line to 3/8". Hoping to get away with spending less than $100 for something functional but user-friendly. So, any suggestions? Seems like the design shown as 4:1 Fiddle on the Harken web page is what I probably need, but will 1/4" line (parts 2655 and 2658) be sufficient (and comfortable) to use, or do I need to go 3/8" What about the West Marine model 380330 Vang - Mini? Anyone have experience with that setup? Other "build your own" suggestions? I would love to see a pic of what the original Montgomery setup was or even what the new Montgomery 15s are being shipped with. Thanks, Neil

Joe, My experience just a few weeks ago, my first time out with my M15, on a 4000' mountain lake with variable winds and some real gusts, that when the boat was at a broad reach or run, the boom was not only extended out over the water but definitely twisting up such that it was not at all parallel to the water (as it would be for example close hauled). I'm by no means an expert but this condition seemed evidence enough for me that a boom vang should be standard equipment on my boat. And in very light winds, I wouldn't want any of that wind to spill out unused and go to waste instead of propelling the boat... Again, I'm new at this rigging stuff. I sailed a Super Satellite many moons ago but I don't remember much about the rigging, only the many times I swamped or nearly swamped my cockpit when the boat was heeling and scaring the sh_t out of every crew member that went along with me (visions of a trip to Havasu / Crazy Horse cmpg come to mind) ;-) Thank goodness I have a good friend with a Vagabond 17 who is showing me the ropes all over again. Tiller control

Folks, I received great comments from several of you on various ways to immobilize the tiller, and even got some photographs, but I lost several years of emails and cannot remember who said what, so I thank you all. Meanwhile, I ran across the following idea on the web: http://www.blumhorst.com/potterpages/Photopoint/0005/cajun-tiller- tamer.htm I rigged the thing with 12' of 5/16 line between the rear cleats, and tried it out, and it seems to work great. Neil, An appropriate vang for your boat would use 1/4 line - no need for larger. Check some of the Harken small boat series - if you want a really 'cool' one, look at the new Laser cascade vang - just be careful you do not destroy your boom by over tensioning the vang. Most after- market vangs I have seen on boats are WAY to large. Seems the hardware guys want to have a 'two sizes fits all' inventory. The reason for not using "over sized' but indeed using the properly spec'ed parts is the eventual weight gain the boat takes on.One day your vang is too big but - hey ! no biggy - then your mainsheet, halyards, backstay adjusters some even want larger diameter shrouds and stays - this all adds up to weight - most of which is acting against the boat trying to stay upright! It is a cumulative thing. These (M-15's and 17's) are small boats - most of us have sailed centerboard dinghies that were larger and more powerful. We would think that a vang using 3/8" line would be overkill for all but the larger scows or similar powerful boats with BIG mainsails. PS - the Garhauer vang is rated at 1000 to 1150# s - and how much does your boat weigh ? Garhauer part are a little 'coarse' IMHO - Ronstan, Lewmar and of course Harken are much nicer product in most cases. Try to keep it light and simple - your boat and YOU will be happier and have more fun. GO 'ranting again' M-17 #316a - with the most cobbled up selection of parts for a vang you could imagine -3:1 cascade = 6:1 -1/4" and 1/8 "line. In a message dated 9/2/2009 10:39:49 A.M.
