Series of videos on MSOG San Juan/Gulf Cruise

I've finally started the project of a video journal of the San Juan Cruise. I decided to do a number of short videos of our trip so that they can be uploaded to Youtube and shared. The first two are done and uploaded with many more to come over the next couple of weeks till the entire trip is done. Lots of experimenting with using video and stills from a variety of sources (video camera, still camera, phone camera, etc) and converting files into formats that will work together, I think I have finally hit on a combination that will allow me to use them all together. Rudder Fix

To all; Thanks for the info. on the rudder fix. I'll let you know later how it all turns out, but am not going to be able to work on it for a few weeks. So far, I have used paint remover, scraped, sanded and cussed at whoever coated the teak with varnish on the little boat. Finally its all off. The worst of the damage is the varnish runs onto the boat itself. The varnish seeped in and discolored the gelcoat. So, have more to do to get that cleaned up. Have also scraped and sanded all the leftover bottom coat off. Now have a bare white hull. Only a couple of dings that penetrated to the fiberglass. Those will be easy to fix Don M15-248 M711 too

Rudder Fix

The rudder on my m-711 has a chunk missing on the trailing edge. I'm thinking I'll make a straight cut, glue on a new piece and fair it to match the rudder shape. Questions: Will a flat cut be ok or should I route a groove to provide more gluing surface. And, what kind of glue should be used? thanks, Don M15-248 M711 too

Hi Jim, I don't consider that impatient, just "getting the job done". Tongue Jack

About six weeks ago, after a glorious sail, I was happily turning the handle of my Fulton tongue jack (barely one year old - standard equipment on a new Pacific Trailer) and CRUNCH! Removing the plastic cap revealed that the bevel gear had broken neatly in two. So... got new parts... carefully reassembled everything... greased it up... casually took a half turn and... PING! The new bevel gear snapped cleanly in two. Even if I am successful in repairing this Fulton jack, it is not something I care to rely on at a distant launching site. Can anyone suggest a better brand (or are they all pretty much the same?) By the way, - This is the third issue I've had with my Pacific Trailer in one year. My impression is that they are a bit on the fragile side. Jim M-17 "Spirit"

I would have to second Bob's remarks here. We also have Pacific trailer under our 23. I have towed the boat well over 10,000 miles over the last 4 years. The trailer has done an outstanding job. I honestly have never had a trailer that worked so well for me. We use it in salt and fresh water both. With respect to the Fulton jack: The jacks have a limited lifespan. You could switch to an Atwood or some other brand but I haven't seen any that seem to be made significantly better. I part-time at West Marine and the trailer jacks are an item that is a continual seller. Rinsing and lubing helps extend their life span. These jacks are not specific to Pacific (that sounded funny!). Most major trailer manufacturers use them and all experience the same limited lifespan. When I ordered and purchased my trailer from Pacific they treated me well and did exactly what they promised, when they promised it. I would surely purchase another one if the need ever arose.
