Bill, Welcome to the crew. I am in a similar situation, having obtained M-17 #633 (also vintage 2005) a couple of years ago, also in top condition, which I'm trying to maintain. I also have red bottom paint put on by the original owner who kept the boat in salt water. I'd be interested in your experiences if you decide to remove it. I loved my boat the day I bought it, and the past two years have only increased my admiration for the design, build, versatility, and sailing qualities. I both cruise single-handed and race in PRHF regattas and the boat does proud in both. You've made a great choice, and I'm sure you'll enjoy both the boat and the great people on this forum. Thanks to all the replies regarding my tow vehicle questions. Very helpful. We are working on vehicles over the next week or 2. Towing with a friend's Trailblazer for now. We now own 2003 M17 #622. We purchased from Scott Simpson in New Hampshire. Scott was the second owner since 2005. First owner was Bob Owens in Maine. Both owners took very good care of the boat. Scott is a fire captain and his professional attention to detail shows through. Boat is well equipped, sails had been cleaned and repaired (couple of small chafe or catches), and the trailer is in good shape and towed home 620 miles just fine. We rigged, launched and had a brief sail yesterday, between the thunderstorms that have been hovering in this area the last while. Everything went great. Had sailed the boat with Scott in NH last week. We are located in Cambridge, Ontario (west of Toronto). Our usual daysail launch is about 45 minutes away on the west end of Lake Ontario. Either 50 Point Marina in Grimsby or the public ramp at Bronte harbour. Most likely will keep the boat rigged and dry sail from 50 Point. The marina has a compound to store the boat in, and the road down to the ramp is clear of wires. Can go and pick up the boat there for out of town trips north or elsewhere. We have sailed our previous Naiad and Norseboat extensively around Georgian Bay and the North Channel and have sailed at Long Point on Lake Erie, many inland lakes, and trailered to Atlantic Canada (Prince Edward Island) I plan on adding bow chocks, so will have to cut back the toe rail at the bow. Has anyone else done this? The hull/deck through bolts are on 5" centers. I have not shopped the parts yet, so don't know what the chock bolt spacing is. I might put chocks on the stern as well, around the corner from the stern quarter cleats. Mast light electrical and VHF wiring comes up throught the mast step. Electrical has been crushed and chafed during mast stepping. I will replace. I am thinking of moving the wires aft of the step. Will still bring it up throught the compression post, then exit out the back side of the post and through the deck at that point. I have seen some deck fittings for this (maybe Blue-Sea?). Has anyone else relocated the wiring like this? Boat has a red bottom paint on it. I believe the first owner keep her on a mooring. I plan to remove the bottom paint. Bill-I tow with a Chevy 1500 (V8) factory towing package, trans, cooler, etcdoes the job very well. I gone across country and no problems. If you own the tow vehicle already (Ranger) it would probably work, o.k. Outboard on the bracket- wouldn't do it... I put a outboard bracket on the front of the trailer (purchased from International Marine) and it works great. The motor stays upright, you can gas it up before launching, eqsy to handle, and it be locked on the trailer. Regards, Randy W. I own a M17 #495 WHICH I NOW TOW EITHER WITH A 4 LITER Jeep Wrangler or a 32 ft Winnebago but in the past we towed a Mcgregor 25 with a 91 4 liter Explorer with no problems. Chincoteague Bay/Newport Bay Cruise

I just spent the last 3 days sailing the Chincoteague Bay and Newport Bay.? I left from South Point across from Assategue and headed south to Virginia.? The bay is wide, but very shallow.? You needed to hug the western shoreline to find enough water.? The wind was great and the weather was even better!!? The mornings started out with a light breeze which continued to build throughout the day.? By mid-day the wind had picked up enough that I had to put in a reef.?? I know a lot of you don't get excited until?the winds begin to blow 20kts, but I prefer 10kts.? The storm clouds began to build so I headed for shelter.? I spent the rest of the day tied up to a small dock and met a few of the locals swimming at the hot spot.? The rain eventually came but was light and eventually ended by dinner time.? The next morning my son and I headed north to explore Newport Bay.? The winds were blowing from the?southwest so the ride back was quick and easy.? We sailed as far north in the bay as possible exploring the marshy areas.? Eventually the water became to shallow and we had to head back to find deeper water.? We found a quite cove with some private piers.? The building lots were never sold and developed so I tired?up and spent the night.? I made a mesh hatch cover for this trip which came in?very handy at night.? When the tide was out and the marsh mud shores were exposed the bugs come out!!!? Wow, you haven't lived until you wake up in the morning to the aroma of swamp mud.? I was affraid to make coffee in the morning for fear the whole cove would explode!!!? The next morning we finished exploring the coves and wildlife and then eventually headed back to South Point?to pull out and head home.? It was a great sail. I do have a?question for all you experience sailors.? I had installed a depth finder in my boat in preparation for this trip.? I placed the transponder in the forward hatch just forward of the ballast bump.? I read on the MSOG website that another boat owner located their transponder there and it worked well.? Well, I must have a cheap unit, because the transponder will not shoot through the hull, even though the manufacturer claims it will.??I ended up having to?rig a quick external mount?and place the transponder in the water just below the bow to get a reading.? Here's my questions.? What units do others have that actually will work as a thru hull unit.? Has anyone rigged a removable bracket so that they can mount the unit off the bow when in use and removed when on the trailer?? Any suggestions would be helpful and appreciated. greetings, i have what i think is the ultimate tow vehicle. it has a 3500lb tow weight and i have used it to tow my m17 to oregon from california across mountain passes with no problems. it is a saab 9-3, vintage 99-2002. consider that the rest of the time you will get 25-30 mpg depending on your driving and that the 200hp turbo is a joy to drive the rest of the time. they will also haul a lot in their hatch. they also have a lot of safety features. trucks are a real chore to drive. one caveat, some of the engines in this group have a tendency to sludge so have a mechanic look at it before you buy one. in oregon, we have a mechanic that also runs a saab only junk yard which makes any problems that come up cheap to fix. i bought the m17 sea weet pea that is still listed in the for sale section of the owners group and have since fixed it up. i am really impressed with how well these boats sail. sincerely, greg

Hello All, Thanks for the great ideas. I like the science ideas as well as the rope work. Kaitlyn, my oldest, is blind so teaching her rope work is a bit challenging -- she can come up with some interesting knots... :) We will have a log book for Hannah who will write and draw pictures. For Kaitlyn we will have a tape recorder so that she can do a verbal log and then braille it when we come back. She will also be trying to capture interesting sounds. Towing behind the boat sounds fun but they can't swim well enough yet and the water will be about 55 degrees. I will probably tow them behind in the kayak -- they like that. Connie, it sounds like you sailed in some very interesting areas -- sharks, turtles, dolphins, soaked women in baby doll nightgowns...:) We are hoping to see loons, ducks, beaver, moose, and possibly wolves -- from a distance :) Three weeks and counting until we leave.
