Here's a story you can relate during your next cruise: We were on our mooring in West Harbor, Fishers Island, NY in our Tripp-Lentsch 29. Not far from our mooring was a reef, offering the harbor some shelter. During the night we got one of those humongous New England summer thunderstorms. I stuck my head out of the companionway to check that all was well.... It wasn't. Drifting down on us with a dragging anchor was about a 30 foot sailboat, headed directly for the reef. I was able to grab it's railing and hold it. I pounded on the deck. Seconds later up came Nancy. I had her give me a spring line; then a second one; bow and stern lines; fenders; and then their boat as safely tied up alongside ours (our mooring would hold five boats at a time when we rafted up). Meanwhile she was calling to her husband to come up and help. He said it would take a moment, he had to pull on his pants and a shirt..... and shoes. Nancy and I grinned at one another - she in a Baby Doll nightgown - that was instantly soaking wet in the downpour and totally see-through, and I with nothing on...... Finally her husband appeared, pants, shirt, and shoes on, but the panic and danger were gone. Ah, yes, one can meet the prettiest girls in see through Baby Doll nightgowns in the middle of the night in a severe thunderstorm if you are on a sailboat Have you ever met your next door house neighbor that way? Don I had to replace the bottom 4 inches of my rudder and did about what you are talking about doing, except to the bottom rather than the trailing edge. I used stainless steel dowels drilled and epoxied into both pieces to give it the strength, then fiberglassed it. Hmmm.... Well, whatever, every two years is the plan. I thought "Bi" meant two, so bi-annual would mean twice a year. But, I guess the bi-centennial was 200 years, so it makes sense that bi-annual would be 2 years. Now if anybody is up for a San Juan cruise in December... um, have a good time! When I was crewing hot air balloons, the propane tanks had to be heated overnight so the pressure wouldn't be too low. Critical if you are counting on BTU's for flight. Cooking an omelet might not be considered critical. It would be to me. Good food affects my attitude. Thanks for the recipe BTW! I guess one could take those cheap heating packages used to warm your hands and roll the propane cylinder in a towel for a while. I don't think it could generate enough heat to cause the overpressure valve to release. Just a thought. Kendall

Cold weather stoves

All this chat about cold weather stoves and propane brings back memories of my refrigeration and A/C days. So, unless you are ice boating your M-boats, let me introduce you to the great moderator: good old H2O. Water has great latent heat capacity and can work both as a source and a sink of heat. I used it both ways. When pumping down a unit on a hot day, the recovery tank would get so hot, and thus high pressure, that recovery could take forever. Dropping your tank in a bucket of water would let the heat go quickly to the water, condensing the refrigerant vapor, saving much time. When charging - and this is the relevant part - the liquid charging tank would get so cold from the evaporating gas, just like propane, there wouldn't be enough vapor pressure to charge quickly. Soooo...out with the bucket of water, in goes the tank and provides a nice, very conductive heat source to warm the refrigerant. Propane works just fine above 32 degrees - with a vapor pressure of about 53psi - most burners work at about 11 inches wc, or 1/2psi. Tying a string on your cold tank and dunking it in the lake is a quick way to warm it up. A 1 pound bottle of propane at a continuous 32 degrees can supply roughly 10,000 btu's an hour,or one burner, without losing pressure . If you are cooking a long, or large meal, you might want two bottles - one in the water and one in the stove. As the stove one ices up, switch bottles. It works because it is the Law of Physics, which is only slightly less powerful than the Law of the Sea!

Small boat clothing restrictions

Joe, you mentioned the size restrictions of a 17 in this thread about clothing: "Doing everything in a cabin on my hands and knees instead of standing upright is just a constant throwback to backpacking. Only now it is a fiberglass tent instead of nylon." You reminded me of a passage in a William Snaith book, Across the Western Ocean (1966). On page 32 he says wryly that "A man must be in top physical condition to dress in a small boat at sea. It is almost as if one were trying to get dressed while bouncing on a trampoline in which the period of bounce is irregular. The sheer task of putting on trouser, sweater, and oilies needs the muscular control of a gymnast." David
