Wow! Looking at Jim's repair for his keel and centerboard, the word nightmare comes to mind. I am assuming the centerboard wedged itself firmly in the keel and had to be knocked out from the inside, hence the lead work? On the other hand, I would think addressing the problem BEFORE the centerboard gets completely stuck would be much easier - still a hassle, yes, but not a nightmare. Meanwhile, the sometimes mildly sticky centerboard on IOTA will get pulled this winter. I'm thinking I should 'nip it in the bud' and avoid the nightmares. No doubt, you'll be able to hear cursing from Santa Cruz when I get started... Blake m-15 IOTA

Cracks inside M-17 hull

I've noticed some cracking on the inside hull of my '83 M-17, and I'm wondering if anyone else has dealt with this situation. There's a single crack, parallel to the lapstrakes, under both quarterberths just under the access hatches -- at about where the boat sits on the trailer bunks. The cracks are about 12 - 15 inches long; one is about 1/32" thick and the other is about 1/16" thick when the boat rests on the trailer. Both cracks appear to close to hairline width when the boat is in the water (which suggests that the hull flexes inward slightly when on the bunks, opening the cracks a bit). I've noticed no water leakage, and there's no evidence of the cracking on the hull exterior. I keep the boat on its trailer and not in the water. The size of the larger crack is prompting me to do something. Should I grind the inner surfaces a bit and epoxy fiberglass "bandages" over the problem areas? Would it be best to do the work when the boat's in the water and the cracks are tightened up? Is there another approach I should consider? Are these cracks just superficial and I should forget about them? Any suggestions/comments are welcome! Gordon M-17 "Sapphire" Milwaukee P.S. Hi All; You can do a rough check for a swollen cb without having the boat in the water by trying to pass a hacksaw blade between the trunk liner and cb. It should pass freely the whole lenght. Another short term fix if the board is not to badly swollen is to mount a hacksaw blade in a recip. saw and make a pass on both sides. This can be accomplished while the boat is on the trailer. Being conservative I ground the kerf smooth on the side of the blade. regards, Don M15-248 M711 too

Towing with a Colorado/Canyon. Any experience?

Does anyone tow their boat with a Colorado/Canyon? I had never looked at them till last night. Drove an '06 4x4. I liked the ride, felt smoother than the Ranger Sport 4 x 4 we drove an hour earlier. C/C has a 3.7L in-line 5 and the Ranger has a 4.0 V6. Thanks Bill M17 #622

Snowbirds going North to Jackson Lake, Jenny Lake or Yellowstone Lake should stop by Bear Lake on the way North. It is approximately 35 miles long and 7 miles wide and sometimes called the "Carribean of the Rocky's" because of its amazing clear blue color that reminds one of the Carribean. Bear Lake Marina State Park has an excellent launch and slips for overnighters. You will see my M-17 "Fore Play" waiting quietly for my return.
