Sean, Nice trip! To the others on the site a note may be of interest - Those of us that live in the low desert here in SUNNY DRY Arizona sometimes experience temperatures of 110 degrees F+, for weeks on end. We are not really upset if we go somewhere and have cloudy, foggy, rainy days. This it is a certain welcome respite from KILLER SUN AND HEAT (as we are experiencing right now)! We do like the wind though (unless it is 110 F)! Besides Sean being a very balanced personality - he is really enjoying the memory of the less than 'Chamber of Commerce' weather they had on the trip. He just appears to have called in his Wind Order. How hot was it when you got home Sean???!!! YEEEOWWW! GO. LB/GF! M-17 # 316a 'that ain't bad gelcoat -it's "patina"! Thanks, all for your comments. I am definitely going to move to the slug system for the main! I should get a tiller tender or similar system too. I've been happily and less-than-happily amazed at how this M17 can turn *fast*, practically spinning on a dime. My thoughts wandered to the article in the Small Craft Advisory mag, about sea anchors, when I was wishing I could keep the boat into the wind. I wonder if I could drag a sea anchor off the bow, and it would point right up, until I get a tiller tender system. I will definitely try hoisting the jib first next time, Tim. That had never occured to me! Another acquaintance who sails suggested raising the main at the dock, but I worry, with my novice docking skills, about handling the boat with the sail up. If it turned out to be a problem, getting the main down in a hurry isn't easy either if no one is there to steer for me. It sounds like I don't need to worry about the cb noise then. I just kept imagining that poor pin and that old fiberglass getting slammed, and that skinny 5/16 line holding it up... I'll be thinking wistfully of Griselda's fixed keel next outing, but also grinning, thinking of the noise as "The Bear"! (I had been imagining it as a wild Nunchuck battle!) We have an extra bad spouting problem because the line entry hole was damaged somehow, and is quite large. (Didn't have the patience to fix it at the boat yard) I have it, un-seamanly-like, stuffed with a small towel. I just wanted to get sailing, so will deal with it this winter. More sunshine in the next couple of days, so hoping to get out and do some more learning and soaking up the fun. I can only imagine sailing in 100 degree, windy weather! Your sails would be self-drying. I love driving through that Okanagan lake area, we've camped there a few times too, on our way south to WA. Monty T-shirt update

For all those that ordered shirts.... I just received an inquiry as to why a check was not cashed. None of the checks have been deposited yet as I am waiting for the shirts to be ready to ship. I was supposed to take delivery today, however the t-shirt shop has pushed me back to Tuesday or Wednesday. I know you guys are patiently waiting and I appreciate that. As soon as I get the shirts the checks will all be deposited and the items shipped out. I expect to ship in the middle of next week. I didn't want to cash the checks and then have you wonder why there was no shirt in your hand in case of delay in production, which it turns out there has been. Today, with my husband offering to take the kids to the movie, I was faced with the first sunny day in over a week, a perfect brisk wind, but no family to sail with me. I decided I was ready to get out on my own in "Ceto", my M17. The good news is, due to the boltrope system on the main, I am finally ready to publish my "Alaskan Profanity Encyclopedia"! Ha ha. With no one to keep the boat pointed into the wind, I had a *really* annoying time trying to get that sail up! The $60 pre-feeder we bought awhile ago was a total failure. The sail got mashed up in it worse than it gets fouled up in the mast slot. I think it was designed for a stiffer sail. On the bright side, I was able to try out the 150% genoa, without kids to scream "MOM! We're at 30 DEGREES!!!!" (My 11 year old daughter has taken to monitoring the inclinometer as though it were a heart monitor.) I had a 10 k or so breeze for the first hour of beating my way through a narrow passage, then broke out into this huge space where I had tons of room to do anything. That was good, because I had that big genoa out, and the wind picked up to about 25 k, so I could really test the close hauled abilities of the boat. I was heeled about 25 degrees for about 45 minutes straight, and one question I have for you guys is, how typical is it, for the centerboard to bang around while close hauled? We took a trip out to Catalina Island last week with 2 other Montys, 9 Potters, and an O'day. Although the sailing was minimal due to windless conditions we did have quite the adventure. Some of the video you'll see quite a bit of wind which we tried to sail in, however, it was a local phenomena, as the isthmus on the island forms a venturi effect. As soon as we would get away from the isthmus, the wind would die. Bummer! The trip over (26 miles) was supposed to have "morning patchy fog".....I guess "patchy" means 22 solid miles of heavy fog, cause that's what we got. When we broke out of the fog, though, we were greeted by awesome groups of really playful dolphins. That was way cool! Some lessons were learned along the way. One of the group lost his way in the fog and ended up 26 miles northwest of the island before he was located and put back on the right path. We were all kind of worried about him for a while until the Coast Guard rounded him up and let us know that he was OK and on the right path now....He made it into Two Harbors at Catalina at 11:30pm ( we left LA Harbor at 6am and for most of us the trip across was about 6 hours) Needless to say he was cold, wet, and exhausted. I'm going to post more on what caused the whole deal on my website in the hopes that it might prevent somemone else from the same circumstances. Suffice it to say it was a number of errors (all small) that added up and could have had a bad outcome. Fortunatley, they didn't. Much of it had to do with GPS coordinates, a lack of complete understanding of the different coordinate value systems, blind faith in the GPS as a sole navigation reference, and lack of having the proper charts. The video is posted in a site called tinypics. It works OK however sometimes when you load it it says "video not found". If this happens, move the bar at the bottom of the video forward until a picture appears. If the video not found message is still there, hit the refresh on your browser and it usually loads correctly. hope it works....this is a low budget operation!! there is no sound to the still photos, but the video clips have sound (sometimes not synced too well.....again...low budget!) I took all the video with 'Jo's pocket still camera so its of so-so quality.
