Thanks, was not aware that anything could do in Powder coat. I will keep that knowledge in mind for the future. I had one difficult time getting it off the frame of my Harley though. Hated that. Turned out to be not worth the effort. Rocks and the like chip paint. Oh well, learn the hard way. Ken, I have asked the folk at Arizona Powder Coating about doing the same type of work and coating the kick-up rudder cheek plates on my previous boat (S2 6.7) The resounding answer was - the material does not do well in a wet or submerged environment. Bummed me out cause I wanted to keep the large aluminum plates in clean and attractive shape. Powder coating as we generally know it is a thermo plastic coating that is sprayed on a part with electrostatic machinery and oven cured at 400 -500 degrees F +-. The coating is generally more durable than paint but is not 'impervious' as it is sometimes credited. Really good stuff (my mooring cleats and some light bases, brackets above the deck) are powder coated with no apparent concerns as of yet BUT I would not really recommend PC for the cleats again as the line when in load and at speed (dallying off the boat - poor seamanship here) the coating suffers from abrasion. I have had many parts on my old toy truck PC'ed (inner fender wells, running boards, bumper brackets, etc.) with great results-but I would suggest talking to one of the powder producers for an underwater application. If you have experience with an underwater application material I would love to hear about it for the exact purpose you state. My UGLY old CB would be sweet after fairing and coating. Hi guys, a thought. I spent over 40 years repairing machinery and some of the things we used should work for metallic center boards. Flame spray is a process of building back on worn surfaces. Crank shafts, Jet engine parts and that sort of thing. Powder coating. I had a terrible time removing the paint from my '87 Harley. Powder coated. Powder coating is an epoxy coating sprayed on as a powder, then cured in an oven. One could have the board brought back to form then ground back to clean up. Powder coated and put back into service. One could have the flame spray put on and you finish and prep for powder coating. You will save some money. I am quite sure both services are available near any large city. Call your local major auto parts store or look in the yellow pages. To each their own. They aren't for everyone but it's an option that costs ($200 compared to $1000 for a foiled) a lot less and yes you keep the forestay...and hoist the headsail up independently. Personally, I don't reef my 1800lb 20'r often enough to make reefing a concern. Bigger boats I do but not small ones where crew weight is such a big factor. Reefing a headsail on the forestay jacks the CE way up too so foils aren't a free pass on best balance either. It also tend to stretch the hexx out of a sail. If a person worries about the head and tack being a weakness on a standard furler they should reconsider because it's a waste of energy. Modern gear is bulletproof and damaging them takes less care than keeping a foil straight...even non foiled furling gear from the 1940s/50s didn't break. For what its worth. I retired in 2003 and went to work pt in a marine supply house about a yr ago. We see bent up and trashed foils caused by stepping the rig on a regular basis. Yrs back I had a 42' cutter with twin furlers too, so this isn't my first and only exposure to them. One thing I think most of us agree on is furlers are great! For a lot less money you can do a standard furler instead of a furler/reefer. Using furler/reefers to reef really doesn't give the ideal shape anyway. A furler has no head stay foil to deal with which is nice for trailering. Sails roll up on the luff wire (which needs to be secured to the sail properly for furling) and attach only at head and tack. You have to change sails for reefing. Harken make small boat furlers. I have one on my 20' trailer sailor. Very easy. Guys: The M-15 doesn't have a centerboard winch or a place to mount one. 1/4" SS plate weighs 10 lbs per sq ft and 1/2" weighs 20 lbs/ sq ft. Think about how you would lift and HOLD the board up. There also isn't a stop pin on and M15 althought you could probably modify the trunck and board to make one like the M17 board. I'm just as happy with the fiberglass board. M17 Flotation

Hi All, I was just reading the digest and saw the question from Dan on the Styrofoam in the M15. Does anyone know if there should be the same on a M17? I don't see any Styrofoam in my M17 and I wondered if the M17 would float if there was a breach in the hull or a cockpit drain tube came loose. I even thought to add some for sound reduction below deck but I thought that might trap moisture between the hull and Styrofoam and cause mildew. Thanks, Briant M-17 Prior Lake MN

Jim, You can buy molds to cast lead ingots in several sizes, such as 8 ounce or one pound. Or you can buy lead ingots. They are readily sold to hunters and fishermen on eBay. There are various sized boxes available from the post office that allows up to 75 pounds to be shipped for something like $15...wait they just raised the rates so it may have gone up.
