Is there any special type of bungee cord I need to replace what's on the popup rudder on an M15? Mine won't pop easily anymore so I assume it has stretched too much. Bobbie

I'm 40 or so miles south of Larry, Tim, 25 miles south of the Spokane Valley. I'm lucky enough to get to sail with he and Randy and Gary from time to time through the season. You really aren't that far away. I'm sure we can hook up sooner or later. t Tom Smith & Jane Van Winkle M17 #496

Hi, Folks. Does anyone know where to buy replacement shrouds and forestay for M-15? I have no sailboat repair facilities here in Planet Utah. Also, my chainplates have two holes for the shrouds. Would double shrouds be overkill or a good safety precaution? What about a backstay? There is none on my M-15. Do the newer ones have backstays? I'd replace it at the end of the sailing season. I think chances are good that the rigging is fine--there are much older boats than yours sailing with original rigging. If it's been a fresh water boat, more the better. The rigging is pretty inexpensive considering. For peace of mind, replace it over the winter. Jerry will make you up some nice fresh wires. My 2 cents. I've always wanted to sail up in your neck of the woods. Maybe I can get a couple of the guys from around here to come visit some time (Randy? Larry? Hello Tom, If the season has been consitant high winds so far, I think I would not tempt the gods. After checking with the other previous owners I would replace the rigging if need be. My hull is #103 built in 1977 after she came into my life the first thing I did was replace all her rigging, standing and running.Im sure she appreciates it and I feel more at ease not worrying about old equipment failures.Oh,and I went right to Jerry for the replacements, it was sure nice to be able to have the original builder make my new rig. Last night was steady 20knots with sustained gusts very much higher. The boat is getting stressed and pushed very hard. Even under well reduced canvas. I know there is almost no way of knowing, but I am wondering if I should be considering a new set of standing rig? Actually, I know the answer to that....of course I do....but I guess I am wondering you all know it needs to be "replaced right away, no-questions-asked" or I should be fine until seasons end? I will be calling the 2nd previous owner today to see if he replaced anything during his time. For years I have kept a blog for my other boat Annie M. and our sailing adventures. Much like other folks on this list. It gives me an opportunity to do some writing and combine my love of photography. We are in Kelowna British Columbia and sail Lake Okanogan. Well, I'm not really worried about my rigging- the boat has almost always been trailered and spent about 8 years in the garage unused, so I don't think the rigging has been very stressed. Bobbie

Mast Rake

Have often read in Jerry's emails that he prefers to rake Montgomery masts slightly because it makes the boats go faster. Is the relationship to mast rake and boat speed unique to Monty? Back in the old days when my gut was small enough to let me use hiking straps, I raced Thistles and Flying Scots. We tried to get the masts perfectly verticle or raked forward just a tad because it improved windward performance -- better pointing. Were we kidding ourselves? I have to add my two-bits to this rigging dialogue. If boat is kept in fresh water the standing rigging should be functional for years. My M-17 is 31 years old and I have owned it for 26 years and since that time it is kept in fresh water. I replaced some of the standing rigging-- outboard shrouds, back and forestay's. The forestay was replaced only because I installed a CDI furler that required an open body turnbuckle swaged to the forestay. Upon my examination they were in excellent condition, Including all of the Nicopress fittings. The only reason I replaced them was that "experts" said that that they should be replaced, automatically, after 10 or 12 years. I still have the original inboard shrouds, back stay adjuster and jib halyard and all appear to be in excellent condition. I still have the original main (Olvera) with still some life left. I will, however, have a new main for Xmas, if I'm lucky. I also replaced the main halyard (line and wire rope) and used only one Nicopress sleeve. Although strictly my opinion, I feel much more secure with Nicopress fittings rather than swaged fittings. The obvious advantage of Nicopress fittings is that any defect is visible. A swaged fiting could corrode and never be seen until it gives way. If I had my choice, which I have, I would take a well made Nicopress over a Swage any day. With the CDI furler, there was no choice but a swaged fitting in the furler itself but contrary to instructions, a Nicopress with out a toggle was used at the masthead. Works just fine. I always use two sleeves and a thimble at each fitting, except on halyard, previously mentioned. I bought the wire rope and all Nicopress fittings ( Sleeves and thimbles) from WM and Jerry Montgomery. The Nicopress crimper, 18" with four hole sizes I bought from Home Depot in the garage door section. It works perfectly, is well made and cost around $35.00, far below the $215..00 or so 18" crimper (called Swaging tool but a misnomer) offered by WM. A real Swaging tool is very expensive and requires expertise. So much for that two-bits worth all and have a great sail. Bill K #55 M-17 Half Monty.
