Another way to keep the rigging from flogging while sailing and at anchor: I purchased a second boom vang which I use with the one already rigged. I read an article about a 36' C & C that used a double boom vang system to keep the boom from swinging wildly in heavy weather and acting as a preventer. My M15 does not have the space to duplicate the C & C's setup. My setup is a little more cumbersome but it works fine. In rough weather or anchored (3 nights at Catalina Island), I unhook the base of the single boom vang from the mast and attach it to the starboard side chain plate (stern hole). I have a shackle attached to the stern hole of the port and starboard chain plates. I also have snap hooks attached at both ends of both boom vangs for ease of connecting. When the boom vangs are cinched up (not real tight), they keep the rigging from flogging in puffy winds, rough water and at anchor. It takes a little to practice to tack with however. At anchor, I attach my spinnaker halyard to the end of the boom and tighten both port and starboard boom vangs to make a very solid setup. I can put my full weight on it without movement (it's secured in four locations). I also use flopper stoppers which work very well in reducing movement. Last week end in vary rare thunderstorm, I attached the second boom vang in order to keep the rigging from being flogged senseless. Once attached and adjusted, the rigging was firm and secure. I saw the larger boats heading into the harbor so I decided to do the same. I turned into the wind (irons) and lowered the jib. To my amazement, the boat took off at about 3.9 kts (GPS) almost directly into the wind! I had the tiller centered with strong bungee cords. It held a steady course for about 5 minutes. The main was being held firmly in place with both boom vangs (port and starboard attached). Unfortunately, I was heading away from the harbor entrance and had to turn back to the harbor since the storm was getting very close. I lowered the main and motored into the harbor. I intend to try the main only sailing this weekend and pay more attention to the setup and upwind performance. I swear I was pointing only at only 10-20 degrees with the secured main - hands off! Hey, thanks you guys but really, keep in mind, everything always looks better in pictures! Let's see if we get 6 months of good sailing out of her without the keel falling off! hahaha. Steve: I know that the yard up at Pleasant takes a pretty good hit from the monsoon storms every couple of years. I hope your 17 is OK. Holly cow, 15% of all the M23's that were ever built are sitting up there! I hope there OK too! I'm sure we'll make a trip or two to Pleasant this fall. Hopefully we'll bump into each other. Do you sail with either of the clubs up there...AYC or LPSC??

The Bottom Paint/Blister Job/Swing Keel Refurb/Ballast Replacement is done!!! Thanks to everyone that shared ideas on how to accomplish all this. I posted a few new pics of Dauntless sporting her new bottom paint and boot stripe (although the boot stripe is not quite finished). We are getting ready to take her to the coast on the 24th of next month. Plan is to repeat the Channel Islands sail that we did a couple of months ago out to Anacapa Island. Norm Bundeck is going to join us and we hope to accompany the SoCal Potters on their trip out to Anacapa. (More boats always equals more fun!) We aren't going to quite make the goal of Aug 1 for a splash in the lake to do a shakedown, but we aren't going to miss it by much. Hi Jerry, I've towed an 11' Old Town Loon kayak for 500 miles or more and only had it flip once, when large following seas got it surfing and it swung out broadside. I've since learned to pull it up close and tie it's bow right up under a stern cleat in those conditions. There is very little drag, and tacking has never been any problem. A spray cover and float bags work very well. You never have to worry about it swamping. The biggest challenge is getting into and out of the kayak from your sailboat. My Loon has an extra large cockpit which really helps. If your Mariner is a tight fit and requires wiggling down into, good luck. Interesting micro-cruiser on Seattle Craigslist: Sparrow 16 http://seattle.craigslist.org/kit/boa/187708802.html Also, while my boat is in the water I've been repainting the trailer with Rustcap paint. Looks good after ten days of curing (the paint can be recoated before 4 hrs or after 10 days.) I did the front mast holder with Rustoleum (it was much less rusted and I had the paint already and the rust is breaking right back through the Rustoleum. I don't know how long the Rustcap will hold but so far it is way out ahead. Bobbie

Hello everyone! I live in B'ham Ala and have been reading about the Montgomery sailboats. Are they still in production? I am currently a sea kayaker, and just got back from a six day trip camping and kayaking on the intracoastal waterway near Pensacola Florida. Great place to have fun. Many sailboats as well as powerboats there. Years ago I sailed a Snipe daysailer, but would like to get a small trailerable boat to use as a camper and explorer on the water on Alabama lakes and the Florida coast. Montgomery 15

Hello everyone. I am new to this site and have never posted but I have reviewed the archives and other material. I want to "step up" from my current MacGregor 22 which I have sailed contentedly for 23 years to a Montgomery 15. I will probably buy a new one since it appears difficult to secure a used one. An important part of the reason for tentatively choosing a Montgomery is the camaraderie and helpfulness exhibited on this site. However, I have never even seen a Montgomery 15 and would very much like to see one before I buy. I live in Springfield Illinois and would travel to see one. However, I will be in San Francisco August 5 through 11 and if it would be more convenient to see one there. I appreciate any help anyone can offer. Happy sailing.
