M17 New Owner

Hi George.. Hearty welcome to the new (soon to be) Montgomery owner!! I think that you'll find most of us will bend over backwards to help in any way that we can. 2000 miles is quite a trip...it may be farther then Connie went for his M-15!! Be sure to check the trailer tires, AND be certain that the bolts are not rusted and cannot be removed if you have a flat. Mine are, and the Guardian Angel of Montgomeries watched over me as I trailered it from Ft. Myers, Fla. to Atlanta, then on a trip to Lake Cherokee in E. Tennessee, over some hefty mountains!! I guess your boat has the mainsheet traveller set into the cockpit floor. Older boats, like my '79 M-17 has it attached to the benches just behind the companionway hatch. The car can travel twice as far as when it's on the floor....but that may not really matter. I'd be interested in learning if the mainsheet wears a groove in the bench when it's at max extention. Hi Scott, That was the best engine / shaft alignment description I've ever read. Makes total sense from start to finish, and using your system you can't screw up (just watch out for Murphy lurking in the shadows!) Turn your mounting nuts the same way............. each time! Connie

Hi Bill, Now you come up with a solution to the lift mount handle problem. Where were you with your ideas when I needed you? My solution was to cut down the handle a bit, plus very carefully making space for it in the lip on the transom. Of course moving the whole mount aft by a tad solves the problem the easy way............. Sheesh, you get too soon old and too late smart! On the other hand, I like my extra rectangular sail locker hatch aft of the regular one. Instead of having the Black Hole of Calcutta down there, I now have two access ports - the sail locker lid itself, plus the second one, which makes life very easy for getting at the cleaning bucket / sponges / cleaning materials / etc. without having to remove everything that previously was in the way; ..........and you can see what's there! I can't envision a 4 lb difference between the lift mount with springs and the one without springs. I'll bet they are exactly the same components, except mine has the two stainless springs. If they weight a half pound together that would be a lot. Bill, when I started my installation, I made a mockup of the outboard, from the clamp down, out of some scrap 1/4 inch lauan I had in the shop. Holding that up to determine the location of the lift mount is a lot easier than trying to hold the actual motor there while you try and draw some pencil lines. I have had my rudder apart several times: No elongation in the holes noted. Connie

Hi Fran, I saw somebody waving and wondered if it was a fellow M sailor. I was just heading back home to eastern Washington after a weekend of fraternizing with the Potter sailors in the south Puget Sound. I actually purchased her in Olympia 3 years ago from the original owner after she had been somewhat neglected for a few years and have been restoring her since then. So this was a trip home for her to familiar waters. We were travelling Monday morning up to Bellingham to visit family and saw an M17, TULLAMORE, being towed up I-5 at Tacoma, WA. As we passed, I waved, but of course the driver did not know me. Who owns Tullamore? Nice boat! Fran M15 #236
