Here's some more of the bacteria discussion.... "Having received a some back channel responses as well as a few list comments to my post last night, let me clarify a couple of points. First a typo--when I wrote I was thinking "within sixteen hours" (for the blood-borne development) but I actually wrote down "within six hours" so this needs to be corrected. (The net throwing incident was on a Saturday morning at 8:00 A.M. and the next day (Sunday) at noon (sixteen hours later) is when I checked into the urgent care clinic with the symptoms which included coronary fluxuations, drastic white blood cell counts, high fever and the disabled foot joint.) My understanding is that when this bacteria becomes blood-borne it often attacks heart valve tissue, and also typically it will take up residence in an extremity--either a hand or a foot--so it matters not where the skin lesion (point of entry) is located on the body. Just thought I should clarify these points, for the sake of accuracy. Take my word for it, this thing is a bad bug. What I have learned is that some of the commercial crabbers in our area carry onboard a 5 gallon bucket (with lid) in which they keep a mix of one gallon of Clorox and one gallon of water, so that whenever they get a cut or puncture on their hands while doing their work, they can just stick their hands into the solution immediately to kill off the bacteria." I'm certainly not an expert (although others here are) but I'd be really, really surprised if it was ok to use anything but diesel fuel. Depending on where you are, I wonder if diesel would be any harder to find than kerosene/lamp oil. My Vancouver, Dolphin, has a 13HP Yanmar diesel fed by a fuel tank of about 20-25 gallons -- and the main problem is the fuel getting old, tired and wet (it's not just dogs who are like their owners) because I use so little. It's never been a problem to fill the tank with a 2-gallon can that I fill at a nearby gas station that does a good business with truckers. I used air cooled diesels (mostly 2-cylinder) in English canal boats many years ago, and they're noisy! On the other hand I was looking at a small English sailboat a couple of years ago that had a single-cylinder air cooled Lister and was remarkably quiet, so who knows? The Albin Vega came new with a VP prop instead of a transmission so a search for Vega information might give you some idea of how that idea worked out. Giles Morris

Hi Don, Somewhere in the dim past I read about using lubricating oil containers for refueling a small outboard. I have been using this approach for several years, and find it's great for a 2 HP Honda. The oil container holds 1 quart - the right amount for an empty Honda tank - and you don't have the problem of trying to hold a one gallon container with spout and refuel the engine. The quart container is small; fits into corners of the sail locker of the M15; they are easier to stow that gallon jugs; and - in my case - one quart almost covers a season's use of the outboard to get in and out of my slip. The quart container is also very easy to pour into the tank................ Try it, you'll probably find it a great solution. Connie M15 #400 LEPPO

Hi Doug, My old Evinrude, and I believe my 2 HP Suzuki as well, had a piece of brass wire about 3" long with a loop in the middle. This was attached to a short piece of brass chain, which in turn was attached to the bottom of the gas cap. A far more substantial safety device than the Honda solution. Thanks for the warning, I'll have to take a look and modify the Honda setup............. Connie

Hi Rusty, We're back to basic definition of the requirement: Is the propulsion only used for getting in and out of a slip? Is it to be used for several miles of travel? Is it the only means of getting from A to B (many miles) when there is no wind and the tide is running against you? The solutions to the problem range from your idea of oars, to sculling, to a trolling motor to a "real" motor. The variables are: How far do you have to go? Calm waters? Do you have electricity for recharging the trolling motor battery after each use available at your slip? Oars should work nicely, provided you are out in open waters. If you are trying to get into a slip, the oar span will provide problems. A trolling motor is a nice solution: quiet; and enough power for an M15 - from what others have reported: but the distance you can travel is limited by battery size; and power drawn from the battery (no water skiing with an M15!). But with a trolling motor you need a means of recharging the battery. Is electricity available at your dock? Which gets us to the answer that most of us use, namely an outboard. A gallon of fuel will allow me to run under power almost all day. More fuel = more running time. No need to recharge batteries at remote anchorages: pull the cord and you have power as long as the fuel supply holds out. So we're back to the old tradeoff: just what are your operating requirements? .........and what is the best propulsion solution to meet the requirements? Decisions, decisions................. Connie

I asked the question re: new Honda 2 HP gas caps after dropping mine overboard this summer. The dumb restraining clip had broken or come loose. Bad Design (and I'm a mechanical engineer). Steve has it right. I eliminated the restraining lanyard and now remove the cap and put it in my pocket while filling the motor. I also keep a spare on board. You would think for $1,000 bucks, they could add a gas gauge. I bought a 1 gallon plastic gas tank with a pull-out flexible hose to help fill the OB on-board tank. Less chance on spilling gas and it fits in the starboard sail locker. Any other comments on filling on-board tanks? I have to do this once an hour when motoring, takes a liter. I owned a Seagull for a dink and saw a few while cruising in the Bahamas years back. It is the only brand 2 stroke I've ever seen someone throw in the water from frustration. It takes a special person to "appreciate" their "simplicity". I sold mine and replaced it with perfect running 3hp & 4 hp Johnsons and never looked back. Tom Colvin (NA) designed 35'-40' sharpie sailboats with long sweeps...really just big oars but only used on one side of the boat. Tom is a motorless type sailor. They work if you want to do the labor!

It's true that outboards can often be a PITA, and I have (once again) sworn never to own a 2-stroke engine again, but the right one can be moderately acceptable. I think that you mentioned the Nissan/Tohatsu 2.5 HP and many of them seem to do well. But... If my friend's dink motor is typical of them it is also unpleasant to share a boat with it because of noise, vibration and smell. On the other hand, there have been quite a few times when I've used Umiaq as a small (slow) power boat and enjoyed poking around harbors, rivers and even the Port of Fort Lauderdale while pushed by my Honda 5HP. Yes, it's too big, powerful and heavy for an M-15 but it's also quiet, smooth and easy to live with. The 2HP is a fine motor, but it isn't as undemanding except for when you're carrying it! It's not that I have anything against human power, and I spent a delightful morning exploring shallow water around a Smithsonian Institution research center in a deflatable powered by a silent trolling motor, but outboards really have got a lot better since British Seagulls were trying to remove our fingers. Having said all that... I'm beginning to wonder how it would work if there were a pair of rowlocks mounted on the cockpit coaming to allow rowing by pushing forward on the oars -- I seem to remember some traditional craft somewhere are rowed this way. water tanks

Just visited a thirty footer with no water tanks here in San Diego They had two gallons (sealed grocery store type jugs) as back up, he used a water maker as his primary water source,,,,,, claimed it saved lots of weight and a lot of problems , is this something new .
