Hi Tom, Our M-15 is in the garage and handy to measure. I am not sure exactly what you mean by bow eye? But I will give it a shot. On our bow (1988 model) there is an a metal bracket mounted .75 inches back from the further most forward potion of the bow. On the front most part of this bracket there is an eye where the winch cable connects, further back are two holes, one for the forestay and the other for the forward corner of the jib. This multi-purpose bracket is centered on deck and .75 inches back from the very tip of the boat. M 17 Sail Inventory, Roller Furling

Good evening, All. My wife, Karol, and I are going to California in December (if it is still there) to visit with Bob E. about buying our second M17. The first was about 20 years ago when we were in our early forties and had good knees and backs. The rule at that time was more sails and complicated rigging was more fun! Go-fast stuff was hot. Now, however, age has taken its toll somewhat, and we tend to equate fun with convenience and just spending time on the water without hassel. We are currently discussing sail inventory and whether to include a roller furling rig on the new boat. The anticpated use for the first year will be primarily as a day sailor off of a mooring in Southwest Harbor, Maine where the average afternoon winds average about 12 kts. I have had roller furlers on other larger boats, but would appreciate your collective input on a smaller boat which is going to be taken on and off a trailer several times a season. Hey, everyone. I have already learned the art of hating my outboard(a Tohatsu 2.5 that Dik Lang assures me will run fine if taken good care of.) I am sure many of you know my pain. LOL I am ready to forgo the whole outboard and go motorless like the Pardeys(whom I was fortunate enough to sail with, for about 15 minutes, a story for another time.) My question for you is, have any of you relied on alternative sources of propulsion, and what have been your successes(and failures.) I am thinking oars(standing facing forward) for the M-15. What about a single paddle with the tiller tied off? This is mostly for getting in and out of the marina, not for long distance. Sculling

I'm a former M-15 owner (too many years ago, when I had the perfect boat but not the sense to realize it or the time to enjoy it) who is thinking seriously about returning to the fold. In the past I have owned a J-22, and I'm not sure this will work with a M-15, but you can very effectively scull a J-boat just by rocking it from side to side. Easiest way is for one person to stand athwartships, feet on the cockpit coaming or the settees, facing forward, and start her rolling from side to side, steering with the tiller. Good for getting around a marina and into a slip. No reverse, however. As I say, I don't know if this will work with a M-15, but someone might want to try it. Wouldn't want to do it over any great distance, though. It would be interesting to hear if this works for anyone. Rick Cavett

The shaft should slide out the back, not fwd into the cabin. Also, neither the motor or prop have to be put in the centerline. I had a 32' sharpie ketch with offset 30 hp Atomic 4 engine and centerline shaft/prop. The motor wouldn't fit on centerline because of the mizzen mast. It was chain driven just like a bicycle and worked fine. Another 42' gaff ketch had both 60 hp Chris Craft engine and prop off center. Built new back in 1934 this way. It isn't the most efficient setup but I couldn't tell the difference when motoring. Bill P.
