By the way. The correct date of Lyle's passing was July 12, 2002. Not this month and not July 18th. I had called Roger at the BCC list and told him it was July 12th. He posted the 18th by mistake. Lyle's death was kept secret by his daughter Linda.(from everybody) Eventually Lin and Larry Pardey found out and let the secret out. Fair winds Bob

Hi Smitty, I have become a very happy M15 owner, after first buying a Bolger MICRO - which was a ball - then had a ComPac16, and after determining it's shortcomings, I finally found, bought, and love my M15. Before I had a 29 footer which was a great boat for 4 people. Then I bought it's big brother, a 38 footer, but found that I got size and mass, but really not more "useable" boat than we had with the 29 footer - and by now my crew were out of the house. So we sold the 38 footer. We sold the 29 footer because of increasing congestion here in the New England harbor areas. It's wall to wall boat these days. No place for peace and quiet. That when I bought the MICRO, a great boat. Being a Bolger box, it has a cavernous space inside, for it's size; and deck space is big enough to sleep two more. The reason I had to sell the MICRO was the problem of stepping the mast. It is a 22 foot long, solid spruce, no stays, and you have to hold it almost vertically to get it into the mast step at the bow. I could carry the mast horizontally, but stepping it became a problem at my age. That led me to the ComPac16 - with aluminum mast and shrouds, but............ The ComPac16 had no useable storage space as befits a good sailboat. You had to cram everything under the cockpit seats on the berths, and then if you want to use the berth you have to pile all your "stuff" up in the cockpit so that the berths are useable. No way to run a railroad! That's when I heard about the Montgomery. Talked with owners on the website and finally after all the good words I heard, bought one sight-unseen. For me it's a great little vessel: has excellent sail lockers and storage - which every boat has to have - it sails well; and is light enough so that I tow it with my VW-GTI. ......and the cockpit seats are long enough so that you could sleep there, if you have a Bimini. With the number of M17s in your area, why not get together with an owner and go for a sail to try it out? That would give you answers to your questions. Connie M15 #400 LEPPO

Remembering Lyle C. Hess

Lloyd Kelman, previous owner of my Vixen and since then my friend, sent me an article a couple of months ago on the life and times of Lyle C. Hess that appeared in WoodenBoat 15 years ago. Though there is only passing mention of the Montgomery 17 that Mr. Hess designed, it is a very interesting story, with three sidebar stories and some great photos, including SERAFFYN. Better read it while you can, I don't know how long I can keep it on the web site (don't ask). http://msog.org/yarns/lyle_hess_wb/wb-lylehess.htm A great tribute to a great man. And I do have a quick question. Vixen has no chafing protection where the pendant enters the CB trunk--it's just rubbing against the unfinished fiberglass edge of the hole. No chafing damage done yet, but it's a matter of time. I don't know what was there originally. A nylon bushing or grommet didn't stay given the pressure the pendant puts on the edge, so what about a smoothed epoxy buildup (outside and--yuck--inside) around the hole? Anybody have any successful experience with some other solution? I've never timed myself, but suspect that it's around 30 minutes from starting to rig my 15 until I'm ready to sail away. The hardest part of that is heaving the engine around (which would be much easier if I remembered to use the 2HP Honda instead of the 5). I wonder, too, whether the 15 needs less water to launch -- I often find myself on pretty marginal ramps even with the trailer tongue extender. On the other hand, it must be really nice to have the extra room in the 17. I think of the M-15 as being backpacking on the water, but a whole lot more luxurious than kayak camping. Giles Morris

Well Guy, I would not necessarily recommend a fifteen over a seventeen. The only advantage I can think of is easier to trailer and launch. If you were to be out for a few days the more room in the seventeen would sure be an advantage. Same thing if you expect to be sailing with one or two people or three or four adults. Both boats are exceptionally sea worthy boats. I think they are the best. But think about your own personal situation, Where will you store the boat, will you use it primarily in one location or will you trailer for great distance? Hi Irv, I am selling the boat because my youngest son is starting college. He is my most frequent sailing partner. I am sixty-eight, wear trifocals, getting knee surgery next month and do not expect to sail much any more. My vision and physical agility are becoming limited. You don't need to be a jock to sail but you do need to see and to move in and around the boat to rig, trim sails tack, anchor etc. Sail while you can, Jim Morris
