Stuck centerboard

Hate to drag up this old tired dog but my recently purchased ('76 M17) has refused to lower her centerboard. Intrepid went on her maiden voyage, nothing went twang but centerboard was not forthcoming. Tried tapping on the case, still nothing. I was told it had been in storage for several years, (could be dirt dobbers or rust.) Still sailed pretty good without the c'board. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Doug Kelch >> Doug, While I don't disagree with the responses from other list members, I would like to propose a possible alternative. As a builder, I have replaced and/or installed a number of decks in the last few years using the plastic/wood composite called 'Trex'. I recently had occasion to visit the first Trex deck we installed five years ago, and there is absolutely no weathering, marking, shrinkage, splintering, etc., nor have I seen any evidence of the material absorbing much, if any, water. For all purposes, the material looks virtually the same as when I installed it--and this with no maintenance, sealers, or other care. Apparently the plastic encapsulates the reclaimed wood fibers so that no maintenance is necessary. Other than the fact that it has a rather 'distinct' appearance as compared to say, redwood or cedar, the only draw backs of using this material for its intended purpose are its tendency to expand and contract more than conventional lumber (thus we use slightly larger butt joints and edge gaps), increased weight, and that it will not span as far as good lumber (which, alas, most pressure treated lumber is not). Trex does have a slight crown milled into the tops for drainage. I have yet to determine whether this is enough to warrant planing it flat or no (I suspect not, as it is pretty subtle). It is available in 2x2, 2x4, 2x6 and larger widths (with a 2x4 netting out at approx. 1-1/2"x3-1/2 inches). Please note that Trex is very different from other plastic/wood or plastic products in that it is solid. Some competing products are hollow and/or incorporate ribbing, and as such, probably would not be suitable for the bending. Anyway, I have been threatening to galvanize my Trail-Rite trailer since I got it, and I now that I actually have some time (that is to say, fewer building projects right now due to the economy), I think I will forge ahead and try using Trex in lieu of conventional lumber when I reassemble. I actually suspect that the more flexible nature of the material will be an asset in that it will more easily conform to the hull. I intend to fasten only one end of each 'board,' set the boat on the trailer, mark the remaining holes relative to the vertical supports, and then fasten them accordingly. As for bunk covering, both West Marine and Boat U. S. sold bunk carpet the last time I checked. Use Monel or 316 stainless staples, or you will find yourself refastening often (especially in salt water). Scott Grometer, M15 #478 'bebe'

Gennaker

Scott: I purchased a 140 sq gennaker from Hogin Sails shortly after Bert Felton got his. I fly it often from just a couple feet below the masthead. The tack remains above the bow pulpet. I fly with and without the Main up. I douse it when the winds get above six or seven knots. I've never experienced a strain on the rig. Its lots of fun and really pretty. I don't find it to be much fun flying it from the spinnaker block. I've read Jerry's comment and yours regarding a concern of losing the mast because of the strain from flying such a large sail more than six inches above the forestay but I've found that by just applying some common sense I've not had any problems. I do, however, fly my 144 sq. ft. spinnaker from the spinnaker block located six inches above the forestay. I have much more respect for the spinnaker than the gennaker because too many things can happen with the spinnaker. The gennaker is easy to deal with. I have lost a mast while sailing in Redwood City Harbor on my Capri 14.2 in 25+ knots of wind. The mast bent just above the point where the shrouds and forestay attach to the mast. We were going to weather as best we could and trying to keep the boat flat. Catalina Boats replaced the mast at no charge, after the designer/owner (I don't recall his name) called me at home and lectured me on how to tune the rig. The Capri rig is almost identical to the M15 rig except for having spreaders. Rich Cottrell Really-M15

Hi Doug, Bunk boards are straight. They just assume a bend with the weight (and shape) of the boat sitting on them. My BOAT USA (2002) catalog - page 111, lists finished bunk boards in 4 and 5 foot lengths, as well Trailer Bunk Padding in 8" and 12" widths x 12 feet long. Hope that answers your question. Connie

Doug-- When I rebuilt my trailer (not a Trailrite) I just used treated 2x4s with good indoor-outdoor carpeting tacked on, and just let them settle into their shape with the weight of the boat. (They bend right away.) Seems to be working fine so far.
