There's also the story of him hitchhiking round Iceland with his sister, again - I think - when he was 17. I'm currently working with someone who would have lived in Newton Stewart in the 1950s, so I'd be intrigued to know if they remembered Bill (although they would have been about 12 years older) or his father. I did once meet someone at a record fair who was at school with him, but sadly he had no great stories or anecdotes! Sounds like they might have tried to remove the vocals for the instrumental version and not done it 100%! I wonder how much of the story of him being a trawlerman was exaggerated? I know the song says he sailed from Peterhead, but even at the height of the KLF's fame I never heard anyone in the area say "that KLF bloke used to be on one of our boats". Even the notorious "guide to knowhere" doesn't mention it for the Peterhead listing (and it's usually fairly exhaustive - it mentions Bill's father at various points in listings for Newton Stewart and Crosbie.) Throughout Porpoise Song off the TVT version of "History" there's talking. It reminds me immediately of the talking on The White Room in tone and definitely in voice. Anyone else here this? Know what it is, what's being said and all that? Thanx, juli.

Is Athena still going? I thought it closed down about 1994. Sadly, I think Jimmy's Tolkein poster was swept away by all the movie posters that appeared 2001-2003. Bill Drummond rarities to be re-released

Paul Simpson/The Wild Swans' second album "Space Flower" is due to have a home recording and rarities edition released soon (when, I'm not too sure). This CD will include both versions of the aborted single "Melting Blue Delicious" that were remixed by Bill Drummond in 1990. The first "Bill Drummond version" is a single edit which sounds not unlike the Soup Dragons and can be found on the compilation "Unearthed Liverpool Volume 1", and the second "St. Petersburg Mix" is a longer version mixed by Drummond and his old Zoo Records mate Dave Balfe, and features train noises not dissimilar to the a-side of KLF 8R (although don't all trains sound the same?) This mix originally appeared on the Sire compilation "Just Say Da". If anyone is interested in getting a copy when it eventually comes out, either sign up to the "Skyray" site yourselves or e-mail me and I can order multiple copies. John

Well my copy of "History" is an instrumental version of the Porpoise Song (the minimal version that is also on record 2 of Shag Times. The original however has Bill Drummond doing the full tale of how he became KingBoy D whilst out on board a ship. I'm sure that at the height of Tolkein-mania back in 2002/3 there was a reissue of Jimmy's full "Middle Earth" range as a book of postcards. I seem to remember there were a good eight or nine images all together. And to think he did them all when he was sixteen! Admittedly, though, he was a bit of a posh boy when he was younger. I've been thinking about the future value of CDs too. Sometimes I think that the best thing to do is to convert all to audio files and then sell the originals off before they become as worthless and neglected as VHS videos have become (in a very short space of time). As far as PDO disk rot, remember that there was an issue of "Shag Times" JAMSCD3 that appears to have been reissued (no idea whether it's a boot - but if it is it's a fantastically good one!) in Switzerland in 1992 and says "Made in Switzerland" above the barcode. It is *not* PDO.
