Parking lot striping - Another change

GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users, Ok, here is the most recent information from the striping contractor. They will be here Saturday (tomorrow) to sweep the parking lot. We will then close off most of the parking lot on Sunday night so that striping can begin Monday morning. I will update you as soon as I hear their next change in plans Harbormaster

Striping, Water Shutoff & Pumpkin Patch

GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users, The parking lot striping has been postponed till Tuesday. Current forecasts show a hard freeze coming October 23rd. This means the water may be turned off for the season by October 22nd. I will keep you posted but please plan accordingly. The GSLYC Race Chair has asked me to pass on the following information regarding the upcoming Pumpkin Patch: Hi Everyone, The 2011 Pumpkin Patch Race will be held on Saturday, the 22nd of October. Skippers meeting at 1200hrs and a race start of 1300hrs. There will be a time deduction for any crew that are ALL in costumes - (awards for best crew) There will also be a time deduction for any boat that finishes Stern first (CAUTION: Any boat attempting this awesome feat will not have right of way) just bragging rights! This will give everyone time to finish the race and go up for lunch at the Halloween party at 4:30pm. Parking Lot Striping

Please park in the north lot if you are visiting the marina tomorrow morning. We will likely close the north parking lot in the afternoon. You will still have access to your boats. Marina News, Mast Drop Party

GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users. It is now fall and time for some updates and changes. MAST DROP PARTY Are you planning on pulling your boat on Crane Day? I know I am. I have organized a Mast Drop Party for Sunday, October 23rd at 11am. Let's all help each other drop our masts in preparation for Crane Day. I will have a crock pot of Chili. Other side dishes are welcome. Please RSVP so I know how much Chili to bring. CRANE DAY Crane day is Friday, November 4th at 9am SHARP. Crane spots are being handled BY RESERVATION ONLY. First Come, First Served. Please rsvp to dshearer(a)gslmarina.com as soon as possible so I know what size crane to bring in. I will bring in the smallest, most economical crane we can get by with. As far as I've heard this is the only crane day for this fall. The next known crane day will be mid March. PUMPKIN PATCH SOCIAL and REGATTA The GSLYC annual Pumpkin Patch Social and Regatta is Saturday October 22nd. Rumor has it there will be kids activities, an evening social and trick-or-treating on the docks for the kids. And rumor also has it that with the water up we will be able to return to the old regatta format on the water with bonuses for costumes, etc. Stay tuned to www.gslyc.org for more information. PULLING THE RACE BUOYS On Saturday, October 15th we will be pulling the buoys for the year. The yacht club needs some volunteers to help with the task. The fringe benefit of helping is a ride on Rescue One (I know, it's not that exciting). There is a lot of important information about when the water will be turned off, Slip rates, Contract Renewals, along with Deep and Reef Channels. In order to save money on a very tight budget this year we are going to change how we will handle contract renewals. The Marina News covers some of these changes. I will also be sending an email out shortly that goes into specifics of the renewal Process. REMEMBER that ALL Slip Rent Contracts and ALL Credit Card Autopay forms EXPIRE December 31st. Storm Report

GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users, This storm was a BIG one as far as water! Unofficially, the marina has received 1.78' of water so far in October. And its only the sixth of the month. Normal precipitation for the whole of October is 1.57" That gets us to a normal precipitation level of November 4th! Is this the beginning of another very wet winter? I think so As far as wind damage, there is none. Even though the east and west shores of the lake were seeing strong winds, the strongest gust we saw at the marina was 51mph. Yawn. Harbormaster

GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users; Storm Warning.JPG Storm Warning A Storm Warning has been issued for the Great Salt Lake and Marina area. Strong winds in excess of 50mph are possible tomorrow. Some gusts could exceed 70mph near the Great Salt Lake Marina. If you haven't secured your boats and property for the windy season I recommend you try to make it out tomorrow morning and do so. GSL Marina Users and Slip Renters, On Monday the park returns to winter hours. This means the front gate will begin closing at 5pm. If you have guests coming to see you they will have to be in the park before then or you will need to drive down to the gate and let them in. DO NOT give out the gate code. Also, we will begin striping the parking lot next week. This will cause some inconvenience for parking but the inconvenience should be minimal. Brine shrimp season starts tomorrow. Please keep clear of their booms. Duck hunt season also begins tomorrow. The water to the docks will be shut off soon. I'm shooting for the last week in October or early November. But it will all depend on when we get the first cold snap. Like last year I will try to keep the pump-a-head on all winter. We will remove the hose as soon as it turns cold though. You will need to make arrangements to borrow the hose. Then, after you pump your tanks out, make sure you stick the hose in the lake and pump salt water through the system for at least one minute. Then return the hose. Start thinking winter weather. Start thinking of winterizing your boats. Getting salt pellets down your scuppers. Change out your dock lines before the windy season begins. There is still a lot of great sailing weather ahead of us. But start thinking about making your boats safe for the winter. Also, for those that have kayaks and dinghies on the dock, I would like to have them off the dock no later than the last Sunday of October. Please remove your hoses and take them home or put them on your boat. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE YOUR HOSES ON THE DOCK THIS WINTER. They create tripping hazards for the crew when they shovel the docks. Each year we seem to end up with one person tripping on a hose and ending up in the lake. Not a pleasant experience when the water temperature is below freezing. This year, hoses that are left behind after the first weekend of November, will be removed. Thank you Harbor Master

Reef Channel vs Deep Channel

GSL Slip Renters, Good news! Very good news. We have been sounding the Reef Channel for depths. And it looks very good. Now I must first say that "sounding" is not an exact science. Nor can we completely identify the depth of every reef pinnacle. But right now the shallowest spot we are seeing in the REEF Channel is 6.5' with an average depth of about 7.5'. The lake is still slowly going down but it will not drop much more between now and November when it bottoms out. The prediction is another 0.6' with a low level for the year of 4196.9'. I feel very confident that we will not drop below that level. So here is where we are with things and what I recommend. We will begin to set some of the DEEP channel buoys back in place in the next week. We will not set all of them though. Just enough to aide in navigating down the Deep Channel Path. If you have a draft near 6' I recommend you start using the DEEP channel by mid October even if the water is flat. If waves are present I recommend you start using the DEEP channel now. If you have a draft of 5.5' or less you will be fine to use the REEF channel all year AS LONG AS THE WATER IS FLAT. If waves are present I recommend you use the DEEP channel now. If you have a draft of 4' or less you will be fine using the REEF channel all year. A couple notes though. First, the area between the REEF channel and the DEEP channel is still shallow. Unless you have a draft of 4' or less DO NOT try to cut outside the channels. The area just west of the REEF channel is even shallower in spots. Second, YOU must choose whether to use the REEF channel or the DEEP channel. We are doing our best to sound these areas and come up with the best information we can. But the responsibility is still up to you, as the owner and helmsman, which channel to use or whether it is safe to venture out. Harbormaster
