New BC short in Paladins of Valor
This escaped my notice until just now, so I thought I'd pass it along. A new short in the On The Long Run arc is set to publish in the upcoming Paladins of Valor anthology, the Kindle version of which is due out on the 19th. I didn't see anything that indicates when there might be a paperback release. Anyway, here's an Amazon link: Paladins of Valor https://a.co/d/cLqNwyM

I've mentioned this before, but Rob Howell, who helps edit these anthologies, is an old friend of Glen. Rob's also the friend of a friend of mine, I saw Rush in St. Louis with him back in 2015. I think I read in this message group that Glen had some bad experiences with anthology editors 15 years or so ago. But Rob knows Glen from the St. Louis sci-fi fandom scene of long ago, so he works carefully with Glen to keep him happy and busy writing more Black Company stories. Rob's also one of my friends, through the SCA! (Society for Creative Anachronism). He's my heraldic boss, having appointed me the Education Officer for our kingdom (Calontir: MO, KS, IA, NB). And he's a damned fine writer of Chandleresque alt-history novels in Byzantium-like setting. Oh, nice! Thanks for passing that along. Relevant BC quote: *For several years now I have been working on A Pitiless Rain – or, The Orphan’s Tale. It’s a family Saga thing mainly revolving around the next generation kids from Glittering Stone, especially Soldiers Live. I have completed the first three volumes: Lies Weeping, They Cry, & Summer Grass. (I am) Halfway through Darkness Knows. My agent has had the first book for some time but I haven’t heard anything yet. I will probably be writing on the day that I die. Seems to trump everything else, most days.* That and some news that there's another BC RPG in the works. Exciting! Finally some real news from the man himself. Like many others I've been wringing my hands waiting for new Black Company and Garrett for years, speculating (usually pessimistically, even dismally) on why we're not seeing any. I am gobsmacked that the reason is that completed novels have been sitting on his agent's desk for years. It was interesting reading recently through the old newspaper articles about Glen how he talked about he wrote lots of things during the 70’s and couldn’t get them published till he got an agent. And then many short stories and books got published. He found the secret of success was to have an agent. Now everything seems to be stuck with his agent. Glen, this isn’t the 1970s. There is such a thing as self publishing. You can write a short story and publish it through Amazon in a day. You get to keep all the rights to the story and make all the money. Well, probably as much as you’d make with your agent. And you get a check monthly. There’s literally no reason to let a novel sit with an agent for FIVE years! I started writing a non-fiction book about my life 2 years ago. I had a first draft in 6 months. I got an editor and had a proofread edit at the end of 9 months. I exported an ePub file and pushed it to Apple Books and Amazon a few days later. I then paid a guy to do interior layout and published to Amazon who prints on-demand paperbacks. Cost me about $4,000. I’m not getting rich off my book, haven’t broken even, but that wasn’t the intent. Glen could be spending his twilight years cranking out short stories and novels and self-publishing them and making money. Instead of scratching his head wondering why nothing has happened with his agent. Who cares if your agent likes the book. The problem is likely that he can’t find a publisher who thinks they can make enough money off it because you’ve become irrelevant and unknown from not publishing in 10+ years. Printing books and promotion is costly. No publisher wants to give you thousands of dollars up front for your book because they don’t know how well it will sell, and they have hundreds of young up-and-coming authors with years ahead of them to take a risk with. But, Glen, you probably have a grand child who can work Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok for you to promote your new stories for free. There are tens of thousands of fans who would buy them. Sigh. And no don’t bother looking for my book, it’s not that interesting. 😂 Katherine

😂 Katherine

Glen's contracts with his agent and/or various publishers might prevent him from self-publishing during the terms of those contracts. I have no experience with such contracts (I am a lawyer, but in a different area), but I could certainly imagine exclusive rights provisions that would shut down self-publishing or at least make it difficult and unprofitable.
