Glen's contracts with his agent and/or various publishers might prevent him from self-publishing during the terms of those contracts. I have no experience with such contracts (I am a lawyer, but in a different area), but I could certainly imagine exclusive rights provisions that would shut down self-publishing or at least make it difficult and unprofitable. On Wed, Apr 10, 2024 at 12:08 PM saulamca--- via glencook-fans <glencook-fans@mailman.xmission.com> wrote:Katherine._______________________________________________Perfect.

It was interesting reading recently through the old newspaper articles about Glen how he talked about he wrote lots of things during the 70’s and couldn’t get them published till he got an agent. And then many short stories and books got published. He found the secret of success was to have an agent.
Now everything seems to be stuck with his agent.
Glen, this isn’t the 1970s. There is such a thing as self publishing. You can write a short story and publish it through Amazon in a day. You get to keep all the rights to the story and make all the money. Well, probably as much as you’d make with your agent. And you get a check monthly.
There’s literally no reason to let a novel sit with an agent for FIVE years!
I started writing a non-fiction book about my life 2 years ago. I had a first draft in 6 months. I got an editor and had a proofread edit at the end of 9 months. I exported an ePub file and pushed it to Apple Books and Amazon a few days later. I then paid a guy to do interior layout and published to Amazon who prints on-demand paperbacks. Cost me about $4,000.
I’m not getting rich off my book, haven’t broken even, but that wasn’t the intent. Glen could be spending his twilight years cranking out short stories and novels and self-publishing them and making money. Instead of scratching his head wondering why nothing has happened with his agent.
Who cares if your agent likes the book. The problem is likely that he can’t find a publisher who thinks they can make enough money off it because you’ve become irrelevant and unknown from not publishing in 10+ years. Printing books and promotion is costly. No publisher wants to give you thousands of dollars up front for your book because they don’t know how well it will sell, and they have hundreds of young up-and-coming authors with years ahead of them to take a risk with.
But, Glen, you probably have a grand child who can work Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok for you to promote your new stories for free. There are tens of thousands of fans who would buy them.
Sigh.
And no don’t bother looking for my book, it’s not that interesting. 😂
