FOTD -- December 22, 2011 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: When I saw today's image, my first thought was that the fractal cats had walked across the screen. But no, it was not the cats. The cat footprints are created by numbers, exactly as fractals, and perhaps the universe itself, are created by numbers. In today's case the numbers are 0.45 part of Z^(2) and a tiny trace of Z^(-33), which are combined on each iteration before straight (C) is added. This unlikely combination produces a somewhat oversized parent fractal with the outer shape of a Mandelbrot set, but the Mandelbrot outline is filled with patterns of overlapping flat disks of various sizes and shapes left over from the trace of Z^(-33). Today's scene is located in what would be the Scepter Valley of the oversized Mandelbrot outline, though nothing at all of typical scepter elements are visible in the frame. What we have instead is a pattern that might have been created by a cat with dirty feet walking across a fractal print before it dried, which explains the name "Kitty Paw Prints". (It must have been a low-class alley cat. The fractal cats would never spoil a fractal.) The rating of 7 might have been higher if it had not been for the overall muddy appearance of the image. But what the heck. One person's mud is another person's art media. The calculation time of 30 seconds will simply fly by even for those who do not appreciate the finer aspects of mud. Fractint version I use

Fractal fans on the list: The FOTD images are usually created on a 2000mhz machine booted directly into DOS version 6.22. Unfortunately, this machine is now down, and for the duration I am running Fractint under DOS 6.22 from a virtual RAM drive on a 13-year-old 200mhz machine. The version of Fractint I use for the FOTD images is the float only version of version 20.04.1. I use the float only version because when I use the full version I sometimes get 'insufficient memory' messages. Jim Muth

FOTD -- December 21, 2011 (Rating 9.1) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: As I hinted yesterday, today's image is another trip into the main bay of the same parent fractal that gave us yesterday's FOTD image, though today, instead of exploring the northeast shore line, we check the southwest shore. What we find is much of the same kind of stuff that appeared in yesterday's image. The image is not an exact duplicate however, but more of a variation on yesterday's theme, which explains the name "Theme and Variations". Since I reused the same color palette, with only a few registers tweaked, I could not award myself a second bonus for the same palette. But I did raise the rating 1/10th point to a 9.1 to show that, at least IMO, today's image is a small improvement over yesterday's. The calculation time is one minute, a very reasonable time that will pass in a flash once the first coarse-grained pass fills the screen. FOTD 20-12-11 (Lilac in the Night [9])

FOTD -- December 20, 2011 (Rating 9) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: With today's image we get back into the realm of high ratings. The rating of a 9 includes a full point for the coloring. The underlying mathematical elements are pretty good also. The generating expression combines 3 parts of Z^(-3.3) with 6 parts of Z^(-1.1) and adds (1/C) on each iteration to create a hugely oversized parent fractal that is quite attractive in its own right. Once this oversized parent is squeezed onto the screen, it appears as a large bay with a huge ring attached to its northwest side. Today's scene is located in the trunk of the period-10 elephant on the east side of the large bay. The elephant-like features around the perimeter of this bay appear to have additional interesting fractal scenes hidden in them. I will probably post an additional fractal or two from this area in the upcoming days. The name "Lilac in the Night" refers to the purplish areas along the filaments sprouting from the brilliant green elements surrounding the central minibrot. The calculation will require a sacrifice of around 3-1/3 minutes, a fair enough price for an image rating a 9.
